Agricola (1970+) (Stanford-affiliated users only)

AGRICOLA indexes and abstracts worldwide literature on agriculture and related topics. It indexes journal articles, books, and a wide variety of other materials. It is produced by the National Agricultural Library and is the online equivalent of the printed Bibliography of Agriculture. In addition to the field of agriculture, AGRICOLA covers biotechnology, conservation, forestry, food and nutrition, and laboratory animal medicine, and many related fields. The file covers 1970 to the present and is updated monthly.

ASFA, Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (1984+) (Stanford-affiliated users only)

ASFA indexes the worldwide literature of the marine and freshwater environments, including biology, aquaculture, oceanography, geology, meteorology, climatology, acoustics, optics, engineering, remote sensing, economics, and social issues. Documents in English and foreign languages are indexed. Coverage includes journals, monographs, dissertations, gray literature, and conference proceedings.

BIOSIS (Stanford-affiliated users only)

BIOSIS indexes the worldwide literature of research in the biological and biomedical sciences. BIOSIS covers the entire field of life sciences including original research reports and reviews in field, laboratory, clinical, experimental, and theoretical work. The database corresponds to Biological Abstracts (BA) 1969-present, Biological Abstracts/RRM (Reports, Reviews, Meetings) (BA/RRM) 1980-present, and BioResearch Index 1969-1979. BIOSIS indexes journals, technical reports, meeting proceedings, United States patents, and books in biology, biomedicine, and related areas. Over 500,000 journal articles and other documents from over 6,000 journals and other sources are indexed each year.

Derwent Biotechnology Resource (Stanford-affiliated users only)

Published by Derwent, Biotechnology Abstracts provides comprehensive coverage of publications describing research in the field of biotechnology.

Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management Databases (Stanford-affiliated users only)

Search, separately or combined, 13 files offering abstracts for the worldwide literature covering the environmental sciences including air, land, water and noise pollution, bacteriology, ecology, toxicology, risk assessment, environmental biotechnology and engineering, waste management, water resources, policies and regulations, and U.S. federal environmental impact statements. Abstracts and citations are drawn from over 1500 scientific journals and other sources including conference proceedings, reports, monographs, books and government publications.

MEDLINE

MEDLINE, produced by the National Library of Medicine, is an index to journal articles in medicine and related fields, including both basic biomedical sciences and clinical practice. It indexes over 3,900 journals, and since 1966, over nine million articles have been indexed with new records added weekly. Over 70% of MEDLINE records include abstracts. An important feature of MEDLINE is the use of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). MeSH is a powerful tool for searching specific topics or for comprehensive general searches.

Molecular Information Agent

The Molecular Information Agent (MIA) is a web interface to an extensible, object-oriented WWW cross-reference search and retrieval system developed at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The goal of MIA is to allow users to easily search the internet to find all current information for a molecule of interest.

Science and Engineering Databases

A complete list of networked indexes to the literature in engineering and the sciences available at Stanford.

SciSearch at LANL (Stanford-affiliated users only)

SciSearch is a multidisciplinary index to the literature of science, technology, and biomedicine that is prepared by the Institute for Scientific Information. Stanford has access to SciSearch data covering 1985 to the present via the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Updated weekly, SciSearch provides access to all records published in Science Citation Index (3,300 journals) and additional records from the Current Contents Series of publications (1,900 journals) that are not included in the print version of Science Citation Index. SciSearch records from January 1991 to present include abstracts. Cited reference and current awareness (alert service) searching are also available. Access limited to Stanford faculty and students only.

Biodiversity and Biological Collections Web Server

Information of interest to systematists and other biologists who study biodiversity and the environment. These pages include information about specimens in biological collections, taxonomic authority files, directories of biologists, reports by various standards bodies, access to on-line journals, and an extensive list of links to other Web sites.

Biodiversity Support Program

The Biodiversity Support Program (BSP) is a consortium of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Nature Conservancy and the World Resources Institute, funded by the United States Agency for International Development. BSP Online provides an overview of BSP's projects and includes an electronic library of reports, books, brochures, and other publications.

BioTech

An educational resource for biology, chemistry, and biotechnology. A dictionary of life science terms is included.

Cell & Molecular Biology Online

A well-organized list of Web resources for cell and molecular biologists. For each resource, a brief description is provided.

Cell Death Society

A general overview of apoptosis and programmed cell death, including its relationship to diseases and economics, links to other sites, tables of contents from cell death journals, and announcements of meetings.

Caenorhabditis elegans WWW Server

Resources for C. elegans researchers.

The Cytokines Web

Scientific information about cytokines and their receptors, including 3-D structural information and topological and evolutionary relationships. Cytokines Web also contains information about potential therapeutic uses for some human cytokines.

EcoCyc

An encyclopedia of Escherichia coli genes and metabolism. The EcoCyc knowledge base describes each pathway and biochemical reaction of E. coli metabolism, and the enzyme that carries out each reaction, including its cofactors, activators, inhibitors, and the subunit structure of the enzyme.

Endangered Species Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

A list of the species recognized as endangered in the United States, the full text of the Endangered Species Act, and other resources for the study of endangered species. For most endangered species, species accounts provide descriptions and illustrations. A map the number of recognized endangered species in each state.

ENTREZ

An integrated system, developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) for searching MEDLINE and molecular sequence databases.

European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI)

The EMBL and SWISS-PROT databases as well as various other databases such as IMGT, NDB, PDB, Flybase and RHDB. Data can also be submitted to EBI via the WWW. A variety of other services for molecular biologists are offered.

ExPASy Molecular Biology Server

SWISS-PROT protein sequences, PROSITE protein families and domains, the ENZYME nomenclature database, protein analysis software, and other tools for the study of protein sequence and structure.

FlyBase

A database of the Drosophila genome.

Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC)

United States Department of Agriculture Information about food composition, dietary guidelines, and other aspects of food and nutrition. Links to related Internet resources are included.

GenBank

A public database of all known nucleotide and protein sequences with supporting bibliographic and biological annotation, built and distributed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).

Gene Map of the Human Genome

Mapping information for human genes.

GrainGenes

A compilation of molecular and phenotypic information on wheat, barley, oats, rye, and sugarcane. GrainGenes includes information on genetic and cytogenetic maps; genomic probes and nucleotide sequences; genes, alleles and gene products; and associated phenotypes; pathologies and pathogens; a taxonomy of the Triticeae and Avena; and relevant bibliographic citations.

Grist Magazine

Grist is an online environmental magazine based in Seattle. A project of Earth Day Network, Grist publishes new content from around the world each weekday -- in-depth reporting, cartoons, summaries of breaking news stories, diary entries from activists, book reviews, green investment advice.

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM)

A catalog of human genes and genetic disorders authored and edited by Dr. Victor A. McKusick and his colleagues, and developed for the World Wide Web by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The database contains textual information, pictures, and reference information. It also contains links to NCBI's Entrez database of MEDLINE articles and sequence information.

Organelle Genome Database (GOBASE)

A taxonomically broad organelle genome database that organizes and integrates diverse data related to organelles.

Pedro's BioMolecular Research Tools

A collection of WWW links to information and services useful to molecular biologists. Provides links to molecular biology search and analysis tools; bibliographic, text, and Web search services; guides and tutorials; and biological and biochemical journals and newsletters.

Primate Info Net (PIN)

Information about chimpanzees and other primates and links to Internet resources for the study of primates. PIN is maintained by the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center.

The Primer on Molecular Genetics

An introduction to DNA, genes, chromosomes, and the Human Genome Project. A glossary of terms is included.

Protein Kinase Resource (PKR)

A web accessible compendium of information on the protein kinase family of enzymes. This resource includes tools for structural and computational analyses as well as links to related information maintained by others.

The RNA World

A list of Web resources for the study of RNA, including databases, software, journals, books, tutorials, and meetings.

Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD)

A scientific database of the molecular biology and genetics of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Structural Classification of Proteins (SCOP)

Detailed and comprehensive description of the structural and evolutionary relationships between all proteins whose structure is known, including all entries in Brookhaven National Laboratory's Protein Data Bank (PDB).

SWISS-PROT

A protein sequence database which provides annotations, including the description of the function of a protein, its domains structure, post-translational modifications, and variants. TrEMBL is a supplement of SWISS-PROT that contains translations of EMBL nucleotide sequence entries not yet integrated into SWISS-PROT.

TelDB

A telomere information center that includes a telomere literature search and links to other resources.
