Artists arranged alphabetically, along with their addresses and, for each, a chronological list of works exhibited. Dimensions of paintings shown through 1852 sometimes given; artists' estimates of the values of their works sometimes supplied. Concludes with indexes to sitters, both human and animal, pictured in exhibited portraits.

Records individual works shown in loan exhibitions in the British Isles. Arranged alphabetically by artist. Under artist, supplies names of exhibitions and lists of works shown in them by that artist. Usually includes names of owners and often works' sizes. Large addenda sections at ends of v.1 and v.4 and beginning of v.5. Major indexes of portraits and owners and list of exhibitions in v.5.

 

4. Graves, A. A dictionary of artists who have exhibited works in the principal London exhibitions from 1760 to 1893 (1901)

Collects the names of all 16,000 artists from three of his other lists (#'s 2,5 & 6), but tells only where they exhibited and approximately when--no individual works listed.

Documents approximately 850 modern art exhibitions that took place anywhere from Aachen to Zürich between 1900 and 1916. Part 1 - introduction. Part 2 - list of the catalogs of these exhibitions, arranged chronologically by their opening dates. Information in caps in each entry is the location of a library copy of the catalog. Part 3 - illustrations. Part 4 - Alphabetically-arranged list of artists whose work appeared in the 850 exhibitions. Under each artist's name the exhibitions in which his or her work appeared are listed chronologically. Part 5 - exhibitions again arranged chronologically, as in part 2, except that now the individual works that were shown in each exhibition are broken out and listed under the names of the artists. Part 6 - topographical index of the 850 exhibitions. Lists them first by city and then alphabetically by gallery or other sponsoring organization.
