Contains records for books published before 1956 and held by the Library of Congress and hundreds of U.S. research libraries. Great source for citations on older materials. Has only main entries; no added entries or subjects. However, has many citations for artist monographs where the artist is considered the "author, and lots of museum publications where the museum is made the main entry. Has symbols indicating holding libraries.

2. British Library. General catalogue of printed books to 1975 (BLC) (1987) 360v.

Not a union catalog, but the most comprehensive collection of British publications because of the copyright depository law. Principally main entry, with some sporadic subject access. CD-ROM available.

Volumes early in the alphabetic sequence are extremely out of date. Includes personal authors only, not main entries, so artists only included if they really wrote something.
