2. Lehrs, M. Geschichte und kritischer Katalog des deutschen, niederländischen und französichen Kupferstichs in XV. Jahrhundert (1906-34) 9 v. + plates
NE1405.L5 1969 Art reference
Netherlandish, German, French, to 1500.
Much the same
geographical and chronological coverage as Schreiber (#1), but
treats engravings only. Artist-by-artist arrangement, with most
volumes covering several artists, though major figures such as
Schongauer and Master E.S. take up whole volumes. Each volume
concludes with artist index and iconographic index of the prints
it records. Alphabetical index to all artists covered by the set
at end of v.9. Much attention paid to watermarks. One of the first
print catalogs to be illustrated.
3. Passavant, J. Le Peintre-graveur (1860-64) 6 v. in 3
NE90.P2 Art reference
Netherlandish, German, Italian, French, to 1600.

V.5 & 6 - Italian 15th and 16th-c. printmakers, plus 15-p.
section of additions and corrections to Robert-Dumesnil's (#6)
coverage of French printmakers to 1600. General format of Passavant
within chapters is chronological artist-by-artist with two sections
on each printmaker: 1. "Observations à Bartsch,"
using Bartsch's entry numbers to organize his own comments and
corrections of Bartsch's work, and 2. "Additions à
Bartsch," in which he adds entries for prints by that particular
artist that were unknown to Bartsch. Each volume of Passavant
concludes with an alphabetical index of artists and also one of
monograms. Iconographic index to prints of unknown 15th-c. German
and Netherlandish masters at end of v.2, and one to prints of
unknown 15th-c. Italians at end of v.5. General indexes to all
named artists in the set and all artists known to Passavant only
by their monograms at the end of v.6.
4. Bartsch, A. Le Peintre-graveur (1803-21) 21 v.
NE90.B2 Art locked stack

artist-by-artist arrangement. In each case, brief data on the
artist's life, professional antecedents, artistic style, use of
iconography, influence, and so on, is followed by catalog of his
or her prints, often arranged by subject.
V.1-5, Netherlandish artists (index at end of v.5);
v.6-11, German artists (index, by monogram, in v.11);
v.12-21, Italian artists (indexes of names and monograms in most
individual volumes).
Alphabetical index of all named artists in set at the beginning
of v.21. Not illustrated.
5. Strauss, W., ed. The Illustrated Bartsch (TIB) (1978- )
NE90.B22 Art reference
Attempt to supply
illustrations for all of Bartsch's original entries and correct
his errors of attribution and omission. The original idea was
that for each Bartsch volume, TIB would produce one volume of
illustrations and one of "commentary," in which misattributions
would be corrected and prints and states and other information
unknown to Bartsch would be supplied. In practice, many of the
original Bartsch volumes have needed more than two TIB volumes
to illustrate and correct them--sometimes as many as eight have
been required. Also, many volumes of additional material in such
areas as 15th-c. German book illustration and 19th-c. French printmaking,
that were not in the original Bartsch, have been added to TIB
as "supplement" volumes. In general, each of the TIB
volumes carries two numbers on its spine. The top one is its unique
volume number in TIB; the bottom one represents the volume in
the original Bartsch that it illustrates or revises. Because
of inherent differences in printmakers' oeuvres, and a lack of
editorial control over the series, standardization and consistency
aren't very strong from volume to volume. Consequently, it's important
in each case to read individual volume compilers' prefaces and
keys to abbreviations when using TIB. Subject indexes have been
provided for some of the TIB volumes. In addition, iconographic
indexing of some of the prints illustrated in TIB, using the Iconclass
system, is available in the following in-progress sets:
Iconclass indexes: Italian prints (NE659.I28 Art ref);
Iconclass indexes: Dutch prints (Z695.A8S85 1994 Art ref);
Iconclass indexes: early German prints (NE651.L386 1995
Art ref).
6. Robert-Dumesnil, A. Le Peintre-graveur français.... (1835-71) 11 v.
NE647.R58 Art reference
French, to 1700.
Tries to be
the "French Bartsch." An attempt to provide the same
coverage of French printmakers of the 15th-17th cs. that Bartsch
did for Netherlanders, Germans, and Italians. Chronological artist-by-artist
arrangement. Internally similar to Bartsch: an essay on each artist,
followed by a catalog of his/her prints.
V.1-4, 17th-c. artists;
v.5-10, 15th-17th-c. artists.
V.11, by G. Duplessis, contains additions and corrections, and
an alphabetical index to all named artists covered in the set
and a few known only by their monograms. In addition, there is
an alphabetical artist index at the end of each volume through
7 and a monogram index at the end of each volume through 5. No
illustrations.

French, 1500-1600.
Alphabetical
artist-by-artist arrangement. Brief entries on their prints in

states, dimensions, and bibliography. No illustrations.
8. Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. Département des Estampes. Inventaire du fonds français: graveurs du XVIIe siècle (1939- )
NE647.P34 Art stacks

Has progressed into the M's.
9. Baudicour, P. Le Peintre-graveur français continué.... (1859-61) 2 v.
NE647.R59 Art reference
French, 1700-1800.
Continues coverage
begun by Robert-Dumesnil through the 18th c., but only includes
about 60 artists, so Portalis & Beraldi (#10) is useful for
its coverage of less well-known printmakers of the period Baudicour
has alphabetical indexes of artists at the end of v.1 and the
beginning of v.2.
10. Portalis, R. & H. Beraldi. Les Graveurs du XVIIIe siècle (1880-82) 3 v.
NE95.P6 Art reference
Mostly French, 1700-1800.
More a handbook
than a catalog. Entries on artists arranged alphabetically with
rather casual checklists of their prints, along with biographical
data and other information. However, over a thousand printmakers
and publishers are treated, which makes this a valuable supplement
to Baudicour (#9), which only covers about 60 artists. No illustrations.
11. Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. Département des Estampes. Inventaire du fonds français: graveurs du XVIIIe siècle (1930- )
NE55.F7P25 Art stacks

12. Delteil, L. Le Peintre-graveur illustré (XIXe et XXe siècles) (1906-30) 31 v.
NE90.D4 Art reference
Mostly French, 1800 on.
One of the first
catalogs to incorporate illustrations into almost every entry.
Verbal descriptions now relied on mostly for specifying differences
between states. Only covers 31 artists, but most are highly important
figures. Whole volumes, or multiple volumes, are devoted to the
work of printmakers with large oeuvres, for which alphabetical
indexes of print titles are usually supplied. Eleven volumes of
the set are devoted to Daumier's 4000 lithographs, arranged chronologically.
The eleventh volume is a subject and title index to the Daumier
oeuvre.
13. Beraldi, H. Les Graveurs du XIXe siècle.... (1885-92) 12 v. in 6
NE149.B5 Art reference
Mostly French, 1800-1900.
Arrangement
similar to Portalis & Beraldi (#10), whose coverage it continues
through most of the 19th c. Particularly useful as a supplement
to Delteil (#12), the major catalog of the work of 19th-c. French
printmakers, which, however, covers only 31 artists.
14. Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. Département des Estampes. Inventaire du fonds français après 1800 (1930-

An important, modern catalog, still in progress (O's), which reflects much preceding scholarship in its establishment of oeuvres. Alphabetical artist-by-artist arrangement. Most entries illustrated, or a reference to an illustration in an earlier publication is given. Level of bibliographical documentation of individual prints is very high. Full bibliographical citations usually given at the beginning of each entry.

the original series.
19. Andresen, A. Der deutsche Peintre-Graveur.... (1864-78) 5 v.
NE150.A6 1969 Art reference
German, 1560-1800.
Very similar in arrangement to Bartsch. Provides some additions and corrections to the latter, particularly by identifying by name printmakers that Bartsch knew only by monogram. Otherwise, surprisingly little overlap with Bartsch even though most of the printmakers that Andresen covers are
from the mid-to-late
16th c., well within Bartsch's chronological purview. Includes
engravings, woodcuts, and illustrated books. Each volume, except
v.1, concludes with an alphabetical index of artists it includes
and a separate index of their monograms. Each section on an individual
artist ends with an index of titles of his or her prints. At the
end of v.5 is an index to all the artists covered in the set.
20. Andresen, A. Die deutschen Maler-Radirer...des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts.... (1872-77) 5 v.

Index of individual prints after each artist's oeuvre; alphabetical index of artists at the end of each volume. But no index to all artists in the set.

the British Museum collection.
V.1-4 unindexed.
V.5-11 have indexes to persons, titles (of the prints), selected
subjects, artists, and printsellers/publishers. In v.5-11, within
each chronological division, prints appear in two separate sections:
"Political Satires," and "Personal and Social Satires."
Microfilmed illustrations of the prints in this collection are
available in the set, English cartoons and satirical prints,
1320-1832, in the British Museum, 1978

22. Hind, A. Engraving in England in the 16th and 17th centuries.... (1952-64) 3 v.
NE143.H55 Art stacks
English, 1500-1700.
Arranged chronologically artist-by-artist. Concise essay on each, followed by catalog of his or her engravings, arranged in a rough subject classification: portraits, title pages and book illustrations, maps and views, etc. Many entries illustrated. V.1, Tudor period; v.2, Reign of James I; v.3, Reign of Charles I. General indexes near the ends of v.1 & 2 include artists' names but are not particularly good for subject access; v.3 has separate subject index. Illustrations at end of each volume.
23. Hind, A. Early Italian engraving: a critical catalogue with complete reproduction of all prints described (1938-48) 7 v.
NE659.H5 Art reference
Italian, ca. 1450-ca.1525.
Another really
important modern print catalog because of its high level of scholarship
and excellent illustrations.
V.1-4 cover prints from in and around Florence, mostly anonymous,
arranged by style (e.g. "fine manner," "broad manner").
Catalog entries and artist and subject indexes in v.1; v.2-4 devoted
to illustrations.
V.5-7 cover Italian prints of the period from areas other than
Florence. Since most of these non-Florentine prints are by artists
whose names, or at least monograms, are known, the catalog in
v.5 is arranged chronologically artist-by-artist, with named artists
preceding those known only by their monograms. V.5 also contains
artist and subject indexes.
Illustrations are in v.6 & 7. Much documentation of watermarks.
In addition to Hind's own indexes, iconographic indexing of this
set, using the Iconclass system, is provided by R. van Straten,
Iconclass indexes: Italian prints, v.1, early Italian engraving,
1987
(NE659.I28 Art
