Provides abstracts of books and articles from a wide variety of art, technical, and general periodicals,on the restoration and preservation of monuments and art objects. Appears twice a year. Author index.   Excellent annual subject index.

3. Art index (1930-95)

Easy to use; the art history counterpart of the Reader's guide. Indexes about 200 of the most popular art periodicals by author and subject. No coverage of books or exhibition catalogs except through citation of their reviews. From 1973 book reviews in separate section at the end of each volume. Volumes since 1984 online in FOLIO. Our subscription to the paper version ended with the 1995 volume.

Z5937.C55 Art reference

Important supplement to Art Index for art periodical literature. Covers a selective list of journals from 1907-1929. From 1930, indexing continued only for journals not covered in Art Index. Entries are by subject only; there are no author or title entries. Subject headings are not inverted (e.g. "Roman art" not "Art, Roman").

Indexes journal articles and books on 19th and 20th-c. art through 1987 volume, then drops 19th c. to concentrate on 20th. Also drops indexing of architectural material, but increases coverage of photographic publications. Provides author and subject access, and abstracts for most items. Available online from 1974 via the Databases link on the Stanford University Libraries homepage. Our subscription to the paper version ended with the 1996 volume.

6.   Arts & humanities citationindex (1977- )

A citation index is organized around the principle that it is useful for a scholar to be able to keep track of who is citing certain key articles, books, or even art objects that are important to his or her fields of research. The AHCI,which provides citation indexing for every area of the humanities, including art history, is divided into three main sections: 1)Citation Index, in which recently cited books or articles(or works of art) are listed alphabetically by author or creator; 2) Source Index, in which recently published articles and the works they have cited are listed; 3) Permuterm Subject Index, in which keyword subject access is provided for main items in the Source Index. Two soft-bound sets of issues per year cumulated in hard-cover annual volumes. Also available online via the Databases link on the Stanford University Libraries homepage.

7. Avery index to architectural periodicals(1963) 2nd ed., 1973 (microfilm) Supps. 1-3, 1975-79

A publication by G. K. Hall of a local index which was begun at the Avery Library, Columbia University, in1934 but supplies retrospective coverage of some important journals back to the 1870's. Organization similar to the Répertoire(#22). Covers articles and books on the art of the Far East (including material in Asian languages), ancient Near East, and pre-Columbian Americas.

Produced at the the Ryerson Library of the Chicago Art Institute, this provides coverage of numerous architecture periodicals and some 600 books published between 1919 and the mid-1960s. Journal coverage intentionally complements those indexed in the Avery Index.

14. Courtauld Institute of Art periodicals index (1989)

Mfiche 1214 Art reference

Microfiche reproduction of the Courtauld subject index to periodicals. Coverage is from the 1930s through1983, and includes fine and decorative arts as well as architecture.Especially thorough coverage of Burlington. The main sectionis organized into broad subject categories; there is a separate author index.

15. Design and applied arts index(1987- )

Subject index to over 200 design and design-related journals. Brief annotations. Appears twice a year.

16. Deutsches Archäologisches Institut. Archäologische Bibliographie (1914-93)

Z5132.A67 Art reference

Indexes books and articles on classical and ancient Near Eastern art and archaeology. Annual. Has author and topographical indexes and a non-alphabetical subject index (in German) that takes a little time to get familiar with. Superseded in 1994 by the online file DYABOLA, which Stanford has not yet acquired.

17. Fasti archaeologici (1948- )

DE2.I5 Art reference

Covers books and articles on classical archaeology and art. More-or-less annual. Lags five to ten years behind literature it indexes. Covers less than half the journals indexed by theArchäologisches Bibliographie (#16) but provides annotations, mostly in English, French, or Italian. Author, topographical,and subject indexes.

18. Bibliothèque Forney. Catalogue d'articles des périodiques: arts decoratifs et beaux-arts(1972) 4 v.

Z5939.P223 Art reference

G. K. Hall publication of a local index,established in 1919. Provides subject indexing (no authors) of nearly a hundred decorative arts and architectural periodicals, mainly French and Belgian.

Another G. K. Hall publication of a local index, which provides author and detailed subject access to a small but important group of English, French, and Italian art journals produced between the mid-19th c. and 1969. Includes access to writing about, and illustrations of, individual works of art.

Provides excellent subject access to over 4000 essays in Festschriften published between 1960 and1975.Bridges the coverage gap between Rave (#21) and RILA (#23).

21. Rave, P. Kunstgeschichte in Festschriften (1962)

Z5931.R35 Art reference

Indexes almost 6,000 art-historical essays that appeared in about 1200 Festschrift volumes published between the late 19th c. and 1960. Classified according to subject—sometimes by medium, sometimes chronological period, occasionally a combination of the two. Indexes to personal names and place names.

22. Répertoire d'art et d'archéologie (RAA) (1910-1989)

Z5937.R4 Art reference (center table)

Most comprehensive international record of art history literature, including books as well as journal and Festschrift articles. Particularly strong coverage of less well-known European periodicals. Indexing in earlier volumes extremely uneven until reorganization and change of format and frequency from annual to quarterly in 1972 which resulted in the addition of an excellent subject index. Coverage of antiquity, Islam, and the Far East dropped in 1965. Author index. Combined with RILA(#23) in 1990 to become BHA (#8).

23. RILA; Répertoire internationalde la littérature de l'art (1975-1989)

Z5931.R2 Art reference (center table)

Coverage of books and articles, including those from Festschriften, on Early Christian through contemporary art. Abstracts. Excellent subject index. Combined with Répertoire(#22) in 1990 to become BHA (#8).
