Branner Earth Sciences Library and Map Collections Research Resources

Three of the SUL/AIR Libraries may meet most of the information needs for this class:

• Branner Earth Sciences Library
• Falconer Biology Library
• Miller Library of Marine Biology located at the Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove will also have items of interest. Books can be paged from there if there are no relevant materials on campus.

Library Catalogs

Use SearchWorks - Stanford's Web-based Catalog to find the location of needed books, journals, and maps. It offers many new features such as the ability to search full records to find works by publisher, place of publication, contents notes information, etc.

Some possibly helpful subjects might include:

To find books on your subject browse the following call numbers either in Socrates or in Branner or Falconer libraries: GB450+,GC203+, GC300+, QH541.5, or TC224-225.

If Stanford doesn't have a document (article, map, book, report) that you need, fill out the appropriate Document Delivery (ILL) online form:

Indexes

Indexes will lead you to articles in journals and series, and to papers in conference proceedings, as well as technical reports. There are 2 sources for the indexes of major importance for this class: CSA and those available via Los Alamos National Labs (LANL):

• CSA [To simultaneously search these three databases/indexes: Check Alphabetical and click on each of the four database names]
  • Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) [Coverage includes all aspects of the marine and freshwater environments ranging from biology, aquaculture, oceanography, geology, meteorology, climatology, engineering, remote sensing. Indexes journals, monographs, dissertations, gray literature, and conference proceedings.] Stanford Only.
  • Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management Databases [A suite of databases covering all aspects of the environment] Stanford Only.
  • GEOREF [1755-present; coverage includes all aspects of the Earth Sciences, including oceanography] Stanford only
  • Oceanic Abstracts [1982-present] Stanford only
• Indexes available via LANL interface:
  • BIOSIS-- [Access methods, search tips, and information about the file] Stanford Only.
