1. NEW SERVICE FOR PATRONS: SIMPLIFIED NETWORK ACCESS FOR LAPTOPS

After a successful test phase involving only three branches, SUL/AIR now offers patrons the capability to use Roaming DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) in all libraries except Biology and Terman Engineering, which will offer this service once network rewiring is complete, and Hopkins Marine Station.

Roaming DHCP allows Stanford faculty, staff, and students to plug their laptop computers into network connections at these libraries, without performing additional, location-specific special network configurations. "Sitting down, plugging in, and getting on the network" should be immensely useful to library patrons.

Patrons wishing to use network connections in the libraries will need to register their laptops for roaming with the campus network services, and have their system configured. They should contact their department's Local Network Administrator (LNA). Students who live on campus should contact their RCC (Resident Computer Coordinators). In the case of departments without LNAs, staff can contact the ITSS Computer Resource Center for NetDB registration assistance (http://helpsu.stanford.edu).

It is important to understand that library staff will not be asked to troubleshoot problems for patrons. Other than providing a cheat-sheet with very general directions, they will only refer patrons experiencing problems to their LNAs or RCCs, or to a departmental Expert Partner for troubleshooting assistance.

2. SLSA BBQ ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

Mark your calendars!

The annual SLSA BBQ will be held on Friday, September 10. Things will be pretty much the same as last year:

Location -- Galvez Mall Lawn next to Green
Library Time -- 11am-2:30pm
Caterer -- Armadillo Willy's

3. CHANGES TO THE TUITION GRANT PROGRAM

Effective 9/1/99, there will be a new tuition benefit for the dependent children of University faculty and staff. Existing faculty and staff members will continue to be eligible to receive a maximum tuition benefit for their dependent children equal to half of the cost of Stanford University's tuition. But, for employees hired on or after 9/2/99, the benefit will drop to a maximum of $4,000 per year. For more detailed information on the new program guidelines, please refer to section 22.11 in the Administrative Guide, or contact Nancy McMahon, Tuition Grant Coordinator, at 723-9441.

4. LAW LIBRARY HOURS CHANGE

Since the Law School is on semesters instead of quarters, our regular school session is about to start. The Law Library will end its summer hours on September 5th, be closed on September 6th (Labor Day), and start our regular hours on the 7th. Listed below are our summer and regular hours:

Monday-Thursday 8AM - 10PM
Friday 8AM - 6PM
Saturday 9AM - 5PM
Sunday Closed

Regular Hours:

Monday-Thursday 8AM - Midnight
Friday 8AM - 6PM

5. JENNIFER NOLAN LEAVES

Jennifer Nolan, the Serials/Circulation Specialist at the Mathematical and Computer Sciences Library, will be leaving September 1. Jen will be working with Habitat for Humanity as their Coordinator of Programs and Administration. We will miss her endless energy and enthusiasm. Please join us in wishing her the best as she takes on this new challenge in her life.

6. CHANGES IN MUSIC TECHNICAL SERVICES

I am pleased to announce that Ray Heigemeir has joined the Music Library as Music Cataloger and Assistant Head of Music Technical Services. Ray has a BMus from Potsdam College, an MLS from Simmons College, and will graduate with an MM in Musicology/Ethnomusicology from the University of Texas at Austin in December. His master's report is on musical imagery in the engravings of William Hogarth. Ray worked for several years as Circulation and Reserves Manager at the Harvard Law School Library, as a volunteer reference librarian in the Fine Arts Library at UT Austin while a student there, and lately as a freelance librarian/archivist in New York City. He has already proved himself a capable and personable asset to the Music Library and I am happy to formally welcome him to the Stanford Libraries.

On a sadder note, Ruth Escher, Music Acquisitions Specialist, has announced her resignation as of August 31. Ruth has been with the Stanford Music Library for 15 years and spent one year working in Special Collections in Green Library. Her time at Stanford has been interspersed with music study, performance, and recording in England, France, and the USA, including vocal study at Londonís Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Ruth's performances in the Bay Area have included appearances with the Berkeley Early Music Festival, the California Bach Society, and the San Francisco Symphony's New and Unusual Music series, and she is one of only two women to have performed and toured nationally with the vocal ensemble Chanticleer. Ruth is leaving the Music Library in order to devote more time to both her private voice studio and her professional singing career; we wish her much luck and success in her endeavors!

8. THANK YOU TO LIBRARY STAFF BLOOD DRIVE PARTICIPANTS AND SUPPORTERS

Dear Blood Drive Participants and Supporters:

Thank you for supporting our first Stanford University Libraries Blood Drive. The drive was a great success and generated an outstanding number of participants and an incredibly high number of first time donors. Please find the strong results outlined below.

Incredible! Since each donation can be separated into at least three components, the Stanford University Libraries Blood Drive improved the quality of life for up to 63 patients in need of transfusions. On behalf of the patients in need of blood, I want to thank the participants for their invaluable support of the Volunteer Blood Donor Program.

We appreciate the feedback you offered on the donor surveys. Many of you indicated that your donation was not completed in a timely manner. Under normal circumstances, your blood donation from registration to resting in the canteen should be completed in one hour. We apologize for the long wait many of you experienced. The incredible response, especially from first time blood donors, was much greater than anticipated. Blood Center Staff have discussed the time delays and plan to make special scheduling arrangements to help shorten donor delays in the future.

Also, I would like to thank the many supportive walk-in donors that we were unable to accommodate. Appointments are ordinarily taken before drop-ins and we did not anticipate such a strong number of walk-in donors. We will extend the hours of the next blood drive to accommodate more walk-ins, but strongly encourage you to continue making appointments in the future. Your feedback has been a tremendous help to us in improving our service.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Joan Krasner-Leighton for supporting the event and Kathy Hyde (Espeland) for her dedication to educating individuals about blood donation and promoting the blood drive. We received very positive feedback regarding the courteous service that was provided in the canteen by both of them. I would also like to thank Brian Reynolds the owner of MoonBean's Cafe and the entire MoonBean's staff for their patience with the noise and their support of the community service.

Again, thank you to all of the participants. We rely on and are most grateful to individuals like you who support this lifesaving effort. We had originally planned this drive as the first of an annual event. However, the strong turnout has prompted us to coordinate this event twice a year.

I look forward to our next blood drive.
