3. SKATING RESTRICTED AT STANFORD
The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors recently passed an ordinance restricting the use of in-line roller skates on the Stanford campus. A response to the proliferation of in-line skating over the past few years, the ordinance seeks to prevent personal injuries and property damage that can result from unsafe skating.
Ordinance NS-1004.134 prohibits roller skating and in-line skating in certain areas of the Stanford campus. These restricted areas include courtyards, parking garages, entryways, tennis courts, and construction sites. Skating is also forbidden on buildings, stairways, walls, fountains, and benches.
Additional sections of the ordinance outlaw skating tricks and stunts, skating at excessive speeds, failure to abide by traffic laws while skating, and unsafe skating practices. Violators may be fined up to $100.
The new law does not apply to skateboards, which are governed by a separate ordinance (NS-1004.131). According to this older legislation, skateboarding is prohibited anywhere within the "central academic campus," which includes most of the Stanford campus.
