ITSS, SUL/AIR, and the Registrar's Office are sponsoring an Open House for faculty to learn about Information Technology (IT) services that can aid in their teaching, research, or personal use. Representatives from campus-wide technology services will be there for faculty to meet, ask questions of, and learn about their resources.

SUL/AIR participants will include those who provide Academic Computing resources and services, as well as the Humanities Digital Information Service, Statistical Software Support, and Data and Statistical Software Services. Under one roof faculty can find information about purchasing computer equipment and software through Stanford programs, connecting to SUNet from their home, backing up their desktop computer, technology in the classroom, programs to help in teaching, course software, data collections available for research and instruction, and more.

Held on February 7th from 4 to 6 p.m. in Meyer Library's Lobby, this Information Technology Open House will help faculty get answers to those nagging computer questions and find out information about the many IT services available to them. Refreshments will be provided.

SUL can now offer access to the papers of the famous Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. The papers are from the period of approximately 1945 to 1997, and were purchased by Wojciech Zalewski from the poet in 1999. The finding aid, prepared by Stanford graduate Maria Kiehn, can be found on the Special Collections website http://library.stanford.edu/depts/spc/spc.html. The collection includes correspondence, political papers, manuscripts by Yevtushenko and others, material from performances and exhibits, personal papers, photographs and audiovisual materials. Also included are a large clippings file and books from his library, many with inscriptions to Yevtushenko from their authors.

3. New Interactive Exhibit in Media Microtext Area of Green Library

If students approach you asking how they can access the list of computer games available, please refer them to the reserves catalog. All the computer games are currently held on reserve for Henry Lowood or course # STS 145/HPS163.

The Media / Microtext center of Green Library has added computer games to the media collection in support of Professor Henry Lowood's groundbreaking course in the History of Computer Game Design. The library is sponsoring an interactive exhibit of vintage computer games on loan from the Stephen M. Cabrinety Collection in the History of Microcomputing which includes an Atari 2600 video console, a Commodore 64 computer, a Vectrex Game Machine, and Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) video console, and a Sony Playstation 2. The Library is building a selective collection of computer and video game titles to run on these machines in order to give students a feeling for the development of the technology. Familiar titles from the past such as Space Invaders, Ms. Pacman, the Legend of Zelda, Battlezone, and so on are held on reserve in the Media closed stacks.

4. SUL/AIR's Ampex Collection on the Air

On Monday, January 21, KQED Radio News aired "The Ampex Tapes," a 4:38 segment hosted by Peter Jon Shuler about the Ampex Collection in Special Collections. Curator Henry Lowood and Richard Koprowski (at the Archive of Recorded Sound) were interviewed for the piece and have speaking parts in the program. Per the KQED web site: "Archivists at Stanford are now poring over a vast collection of photos, recordings and machines that make up a significant chapter in Silicon Valley's high-tech past. The university library recently acquired the history collections of the Redwood City recording pioneer Ampex. Researchers say that just cataloging the collection, which documents the development of audio and videotape recording in the U.S., will take several years to complete."
