Professor Mark Denny was looking for a place to demonstrate the Coriolis Effect for his Oceanic Biology class. The Coriolis Effect is the deflecting force that acts on a body in motion due to the earth's rotation. He needed to suspend a very long 60 lb pendulum and the Miller Library's cupola was ideal. It even had a eye-bolt already built into the center. Attached are some pictures taken while the pendulum was being set up.

In order to hang the pendulum, Mark rented a scissor lift that let him reach the eye-bolt that was 27 feet above the floor. While we had the lift in the library, we were able to swap out the lights in the cupola, several of which were burnt out but not easy to replace.

The Jackson Library at the Graduate School of Business announces the formation of a new activity center intended to support the School's BestWeb Project. The Web Content Production unit will provide content classification and conversion services and have responsibility for maintaining the School's developing web-based content repository. BestWeb (Business Electronic Strategy and Technology Web) is a set of initiatives that will lead to major redesign of the GSB's web site and a repackaging of the School's content. The project is a major effort to leverage the Web to enhance productivity, disseminate management knowledge, improve learning processes, foster communication, and build relationships. A content management software, Blue Martini, has been selected as the underlying framework for this project.

We are recruiting currently for a Web Content Production Manager, who will have responsibility for building the team and for designing and managing the processes associated with content conversion and management. The Serials Department welcomes its newest Library Specialist, Sue Li. Sue is filling behind Ann Lam who left SUL at the end of last year, and we are very happy to report that we are now fully staffed again. Sue comes to us highly recommended and with a wealth of experience. She has a BA in Germanic Studies from Canton, China, and an MS in Applied Linguistics and Education from Leipzig, Germany. She spent 10 years working as an instructor and library coordinator at Hackney College, London,and has done a lot of teaching and tutoring German, Chinese and ESL. We are very excited to have her join our group.

The Catalog Department is very pleased to welcome two new staff members who have joined the department recently. They are Lili Yang, a library specialist in the Materials Control Unit, and Elga Zalite, a classifier in the Classification Unit.

Although new to the Catalog Department, Lili is not new to SUL. She has been an hourly employee in SAL and SSRC since September 1999. Her responsibilities in the Materials Control Unit will include processing of microforms, Stanford dissertations, gifts, and bulk collections.

Elga is part of the team that classifies incoming books that have no readily available LC call number at the point of receipt, to allow such materials to be quickly integrated into our classified collections and available to readers. Elga has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Latvia and has done extensive research on economic history of Eastern Europe, history of the Holocaust, Baltic history in general, and contemporary European politics.

Process copy cataloging for monographic materials in most Western languages. Enhances copy according to Law Library requirements, including assignment of Stanford Law Library classification letters. Verifies descriptive information, name and subject access points. Supervises two Library Specialists within the Catalog Department, including recruitment, training, and evaluation.

Qualifications: Experience in copy cataloging. Knowledge of cataloging functions and basic tools, including AACR2, LCRIs, LCSH, and USMARC. Consistent accuracy while maintaining productivity. Good computer skills and physical tolerance for at least six hours per day of computer work. Proficiency using PC-based applications (Windows, email, Integrated Library System). Strong supervisory skills and the ability to work independently and as a team member. Excellent oral and written communications skills. Reading knowledge of one Western foreign language desired.
