After over two years of planning and proposal development, SUL/AIR's E-journal User Study now has a full-time leader and is rapidly becoming operational. We are delighted that Haekyung Jeon-Slaughter has taken on the challenge of leading this project as its research director. This project affords the opportunity for her to delve into new and large datasets, a prospect she finds particularly appealing. Hattie, as she wishes to be known, earned a PhD in Economics from Cornell and has taught economics at Buffalo State College. She will be working closely with Vicky Reich, HighWire Press staff, and Institute for the Future in conducting the study (which was reported in the October 13, 2000, issue). Located in HighWire's sumptuous new offices on Page Mill Road, she may be reached at 3-1012. Hattie has been an avid user of SUL/AIR resources and facilities for some months, and is pleased to be associated with us. Please join Vicky and me in welcoming her.

We are very pleased to announce that Karen Clay will join SUL as the Head Librarian and Bibliographer of the Engineering Library, effective February 12, 2001.

Currently, Karen is Head of the William R. Newman Agriculture Library at the University of Manitoba. She actively participates on several library committees, including the Research Committee (Chair), the Committee for Networked Databases, the Web Development Team, the University Senate Committee on Academic Computing, and the Agriculture Library Users Committee. Previous positions include working as a Reference Librarian at the Engineering Library at the University of Manitoba, an Information Specialist and Project Leader for the Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd, a database designer at the International Institute for Sustainable Development, a programmer at Micromet, Inc., a researcher and teaching assistant at the University of British Columbia, and as a document delivery specialist at the Canadian Institute of Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI). In addition to her Master of Library and Information Studies degree, Karenšs academic background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Design Engineering and a Master of Science in Bio-Resource Engineering.

Yes, there will soon be two Karenšs working at the Engineering Library! After having the Head Librarian position vacant for 17 months, it will be wonderful dilemma to have two librarians who have the same name. Karen Greig has done an excellent job but she is looking forward to dropping back to 0.75 FTE so she can take more hiking trips. She has done a great job keeping the Engineering Library running on an even keel during this interim.

I am delighted to announce that we have two new librarians in the Information Center.

Jim Kent is our new Coordinator of Media-Microtext Services. He has considerable experience with film and technology. He also has been a teacher and served well on the IC desk for a number of years. His office will be in the Media-Microtext area.

Malgorzata Schaefer is our new Coordinator of Instructional Services. She has worked for Stanford for a number of years and brings many strengths, including excellent management and teaching skills, plus an eye for detail and design. She has already done many of the duties that make up her new position. Her office will be near Interlibrary Services in the IC office suite, Room 161B.

Both Jim and Malgorzata will officially start in these new positions on Monday, Dec. 18.
