The elevator in Math Corner is scheduled to be shut down Monday, July 23 through Friday, September 21, 2001 for renovation. This elevator upgrade is necessary because the existing elevator controls and equipment are at the end of their life expectancy and a major unscheduled breakdown would affect the operation of the building for a longer time.

In order to accommodate this temporary inconvenience,

- the back stairwell will be open so that you can enter/exit the library via the Emergency Exit;

- the 4th floor book drop by the back door will be reopened (and the one by the front door closed); and

- the outside book drop will be open 24 hours/day.

However, please DO NOT return Reserve items into the outside book drop if the library is open, or you may be assessed overdue fines.

It started out as a cloudy day, but the weather warmed up enough on July 12th to have a beautiful SUL/AIR and SLSA staff picnic. Although we only anticipated 400 staff members, we were pleased to see the more than 560 in attendance. There was a variety of food and drink-- hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, salads, watermelon, ice cream, lemonade, ice tea, and punch. Everyone in attendance seemed to enjoy having time to catch up with colleagues from various libraries and departments while eating their meal in the Centennial Garden. Thank you for coming and for the suggestions we've already received about menus for next year. And a big thank you to Catherine Lewis for pulling off such a great event!

Come join the gang of people who help organize staff development events and fun outings such as the annual Jasper Ridge tour, teleconferences, brown bag lectures. The Stanford Library Staff Association is looking for a few good people to help out with planning activities and suggesting new ideas. Open positions on the SLSA board include:

We have a great crew of people who have volunteered to stay on as members to help out with activities in the year ahead. Our treasurer, Kelly Khuel, has agreed to stay on for another term. And several of the people involved in this years booksale are also contributing their wisdom in the year ahead. An eclectic group from the Law Library, Tanner Philosophy Library and Lane Medical Library, the SLSA board would especially like to include people from SUL and other coordinate libraries. Serving with SLSA is a good way to keep connected with other colleagues and find out what's happening at various libraries.
