1. Institute on 21st Century Librarianship Plenary Sessions Available to SUL/AIR Staff

The Institute on 21st Century Librarianship will be holding its Second Annual Institute the week of August 5-11, 2001. As you see the participants and speakers around the libraries please welcome them and help them enjoy their week here on campus.

Each morning there will be plenary sessions held in Room 02 of History Building 200 from 8:30-10:00 with a limited number of places available to exempt SUL/AIR staff. Information on the plenary session speakers is available on the Institute website at:

http://institute21.stanford.edu/summer/schedule.html

Those who wish to attend may, with the approval of their supervisor, send an email to Catherine Lewis (catlewis@sulmail.stanford.edu) indicating which session(s) they are interested in attending. First come, first served as the number of spaces available in each session are limited. I look forward to seeing you at these stimulating presentations.

2. New Fiction: Figurski at Findhorn on Acid

Eastgate is pleased to announce the publication of FIGURSKI AT FINDHORN ON ACID, a combinatoric screwball comedy by Richard Holeton.

http://www.eastgate.com/catalog/Figurski.html

What do a murderous graduate student, a handless cup flipper, and a devious journalist have in common? All three want to find a pair of centuries-old mechanical pigs. Their alliances and double-crosses take them from a Scottish commune to the Moroccan desert by way of a Florida trailer park. Along the way, alternate and virtual realities are explored, until past, future, and processed ham are revealed and fed to the pigs.

"Holeton's hypertext belongs in the tradition of screwball comedy, but it raises that tradition to the level of metaphysics--a cross between Borges and the Marx Brothers."
