1. GREEN LIBRARY'S INFORMATION DESK GONE

Friday, June 11 marked the last day of operation for Green Library's Information Desk. The Information Desk first opened in January 1980 along with the then new East Wing of Green Library. Library public service planners believed that the new facility would increase traffic and demand for services in Green and that the presence of a new service point in Green East near the entrance to the building would give library users quicker access to directional and simple bibliographic information.

The new Information Desk was to be staffed by volunteers from all library units. Almost 20 years, over 200 volunteers, and approximately 100,000 questions later, another new facility is being planned and the volunteer Information Desk has finished its mission. Many thanks to all the past and present volunteers who made it all work. While all who volunteered deserve recognition, let me take this opportunity to single out Jane Vaden (and present her with a virtual "Golden Info" award) who has been a volunteer since the Desk's inception. Kudos to Jane and the rest of the Information Desk staff.

2. REMINDER: 498-1440 DIAL-IN SERVICE IS CLOSED

On June 17, Communication and Networking Services (CNS) turned off (for the final time) the 14.4Kbps dial-in service that operated at 498-1440.

As publicized throughout the spring, summer, and fall of 1998, the University upgraded to a higher-speed modem pool dial-in service last September. The new Central Modem Pool is accessible at 650-325-1010. Details about the new service are available at:

http://cns.stanford.edu/datacom/update.html

To allow ample time for modem users to switch to the new number, CNS maintained the old 498-1440 pool into Spring Quarter. Capacity was scaled down as demand decreased until, finally, all modems at 498-1440 were turned off on June 17.

To report trouble with the modem pool or other remote access services, call the CNS repair line at 650-723-1611.

Information about all CNS remote access services is on the Web at:
