2. THE 10,000-YEAR LIBRARY
As previously announced, all SUL/AIR staff members are
invited to a public debate on Sunday, July 2 from 1:30 to
3:00 p.m. in the Hewlett-Packard Auditorium, Gates Computer
Science Building, 353 Serra Street on the Stanford campus.
Cutting-edge informationists and futurists will engage in an
open discussion regarding what information civilization needs
to keep, and how best to keep it.
This event caps a two-day invitational symposium on "The
10,000-Year Library" organized by The Long Now Foundation and
Stanford University Libraries. During the symposium, two
dozen distinguished technologists, anthropologists,
scientists, librarians, and authors, including the Long Now
Foundation board, will have grappled with issues relating to
the permanence of information and the responsibility for its
stewardship.
Following -- and informed by -- the public briefing, Long Now
will publish the recommendations, findings, and discussions
of this extraordinary meeting of minds.
The Long Now Foundation, established in 1996, seeks to
promote slower/better thinking and to focus our collective
creativity on the next 10,000 years. For more information
about the Long Now Foundation: www.longnow.org
The conference is sponsored by the Lazy Eight Foundation, a
non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to promoting
research and development in the sciences and education.
