1. Community Invited to Academic Council Forum March 8 (From Stanford Report)

Faculty, staff and students are invited to join President John Hennessy and members of the Academic Council for "Taking Stock: Five Continuing Successes -- and Five Challenges for the Future," a presentation and panel discussion scheduled for Thursday, March 8, at 4:15 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium.

The discussion, which also will feature five members of the faculty, is open to the entire Stanford community. Hennessy will convene the discussion after a brief 3:15 p.m. meeting of the Faculty Senate.

The presentation and panel discussion is designed to celebrate recent successes while beginning a campus-wide dialogue about challenges that affect the university's successful pursuit of its mission.

Joining Hennessy for a discussion of the challenges will be Albert Camarillo, professor of American history and director of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity; Jeffrey Koseff, senior associate dean of the School of Engineering and professor of civil and environmental engineering; Patricia Jones, vice provost for faculty development and professor of biological sciences; Lynn Orr, dean of the School of Earth Sciences; and Judith Swain, the Arthur L. Bloomfield Professor of Medicine and chair of medicine.

2. ILL Pickup Now at Green Loan Desk

Thanks to hard work on the part of Rob Daigle, Sarah Seestone, and Mary Munill, patrons may now pick up their interlibrary loan materials at the Green Loan Desk, greatly increasing the time frame for this activity.

Starting March 1, you can use Web pages to request materials on interlibrary loan. You'll find links to them at:

http://www-sul.stanford.edu/depts/ils/delivery.html

You must authenticate to reach the request forms for ILS. The Web pages are the result of much hard work on the part of Rob Daigle and Jon Lavigne, with input from many other staff members.

3. Academic Computing Welcomes Charles Kerns

I'm pleased to announce that, after a several year hiatus with the Stanford Learning Lab, Charles Kerns has returned to SUL/AIR's Academic Computing group. Effective March 1, Charles will be the Educational Technology Manager working on the Open Knowledge Initiative, a joint project with MIT to develop a course support infrastructure. He will lead the project's assessment, design, and delivery efforts.

Charles is located on the second floor of Meyer Library in Area 240; he can be reached at charles.kerns@stanford. Please join me in welcoming him back.
