1. Bender Room 'Buzzing' with Saturday Visitor...
A reminder of spring was evident on Saturday, March17,
when one of our "neighbors" decided to visit with
students in the Bender Room of Green Library:
A 2" Hummingbird found its way into the 5th
Floor Reading Room. The bird was observed
flitting about the room for about 4 hours,
resting in the overhead lights occasionally. The
tiny aviator provided a small diversion, but no
noise, which is important for this quiet reading
room.
A thoughtful student donated an orange, which was
placed on a windowsill at the only open window.
After a strenuous workout, trying in vain to find
a treat to consume in a room where no food and
drink are allowed, it is the opinion of this
observer that the bird had had just about enough.
Finally with a decisive flutter, the orange lured
it to the window. Not finding the orange as
attractive as the blossoms outside, our visitor
was gone as quickly as it had arrived.
Students and bird survived the ordeal.
We do get along with local residents. Report is
that the orange was placed in a plastic bag and
dumped outside the library by a conscientious
student, who closed the window after the
impromptu guest had left.
