1. CHANGES TO MELVYL AND UC'S VERSION OF MEDLINE

Melvyl, part of the University of California's new California Digital Library (CDL), now refers only to the union catalog for the UC campuses. Note that the URL for Melvyl's Web search page has also changed from http://www.melvyl.ucop.edu to:

http://www.dbs.cdlib.org

For those who maintain Web pages that have multiple links and references to Melvyl, the old address will act as an alias indefinitely. One advantage of using the new URL is that you can link to the search page with a specific database chosen (e.g., Magazine and Journal Articles instead of Melvyl).

In addition, CDL's MEDLINE Plus has changed its name to MEDLINE/HealthSTAR. This change became necessary when the National Library of Medicine established a new consumer-based system called MEDLINE Plus. NOTE: The Stanford community can access MEDLINE through interfaces other than the one provided by the CDL. For a description of the options, see:

2. NEW SUL/AIR ORGANIZATION: ACADEMIC COMPUTING

In December, SUL/AIR announced a new organizational model for its computing and technology units. See "Changes in SUL/AIR Computing and Instructional Technology Support Model" in the December 11 issue of SUL/AIR News.

The new organization, which encompasses RITS (Research and Instructional Technologies Support), Residential Computing, and the staff and public desktop support components of the Systems Office, is now known as Academic Computing. It is managed jointly by Lois Brooks, who handles the programmatic services side of the new organization, and Jeff Merriman, who is responsible for technology operations and development within Academic Computing.

Information about Academic Computing is on the Web at:

http://acomp.stanford.edu

The URL listed above is the new home page for the Academic Computing group. Please note that this site will be replacing the RITS Web site, http://rits.stanford.edu/. In addition, email addresses that ended in "@rits.stanford.edu" (e.g., consult@rits.stanford.edu, webmaster@rits.stanford.edu) now end in "@acomp.stanford.edu."

If you have questions about this new organization, please contact Lois Brooks, lbrooks@leland.stanford.edu, or Jeff Merriman, merriman@stanford.edu. If you have Web- or email-related questions, please send email to webmaster@acomp.stanford.edu.

3. NEW VERSION OF GEOREF IN FOLIO

After months of work and planning, Stanford has loaded an all-new, z39.50-compatible version of GeoRef.

You can access this new version the same way you accessed the old version. In Folio, type select GeoRef. There are many changes to the way this new file works. The most notable three changes are: Author Searching, Limit Commands, and Geographic/Map Searching. Summaries of these changes are included below.

Note that Export Display is not yet enabled to work with EndNote. (Niles, Inc. is working on it, and we'll let you know as soon as it's operative.)

AUTHOR SEARCHING: The "Author" index now performs a simple word search, i.e., it does NOT link a last name with an initial or a first name. It will find names in any order, from multiple authors, with no automatic truncation of names or initials. USE THE "AUTHOR PHRASE"(AP) index for more precise searching or Browse Author (A) to see possibilities. Type Help Author for more information.

LIMIT COMMANDS: Most of the former Limit Commands, including Language, Doctype, Biblevel, Category, Year and Since, are now full indexes with associated Help Screens. Type Show Indexes for a complete list of the indexes now available.

EXPANDED GEOGRAPHIC AREA / MAP SEARCHING CAPABILITIES:

  • Latitude and Longitude searches are now available. Type Help Latitude for details.
  • Maptype and Mapscale are also searchable indexes. Type Help Maptype or Help Mapscale for details. Illustrations are also retrievable. Type Help Illus for details.
  • A new index has been added: PLACE. This is a less precise search than a Thesaurus search. Type Help Place for details.

We will soon be scheduling introductory sessions for the new GeoRef at various times in Branner Library. Please let Jane Ingalls (jingalls@leland.stanford.edu) or me (cderksen@marine.stanford.edu) know if you have any questions.

On my retirement I would like to thank all of you for being so generous in your words and gifts to me:

Thank you for your gift of smile
that carved my every day. Thank you for your words of
kindness that echo through my days.
Thank you for your stretched hands so I did not falter.

Thank you for your faith in me...
