As part of the Scholars' Workshop series, a presentation will be held by staff and students of the SSRC and Branner Library on geographic information systems and spatial data analysis in the Social Sciences. Statistical methods, when combined with a GIS, can help one visualize and analyze spatial data in research and instruction.

The workshop will include a brief introduction to GIS and the resources available at Stanford, a presentation on mapping and geocoding data, and presentations on descriptive and explanatory spatial data analysis.

I am happy to announce that John McDonald has taken a halftime position in the Information Center as Senior Reference Specialist. He brings a wide range of experience and knowledge to this position. Most recently he has worked in Special Collections, as well as the Humanities and Area Studies Resource Center where he continues as bibliographic assistant to the curator of British and American history.
