For those among library staff who use the pine telnet client for email accounts serviced by SULMAIL, please note that you will need to use means other that FTP (e.g., Simeon or Eudora desktop email clients) to process mail attachments. And, thanks to our ITSS colleagues for their aggressive, ongoing computer and network security programs, efforts that pointed out the FTP "hole" in the access controls for SUL's mail server.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Dell is voluntarily recalling certain batteries that were sold for use with some models of Latitude and Inspiron notebook computers. These batteries can short circuit, even when the battery is not in use, potentially causing them to become very hot, release smoke and possibly catch fire.

The recalled batteries were sold with the following models of Dell notebook computers:

• Latitude CPiA
• Latitude CPiR
• Latitude CPtC
• Latitude CPtS
• Latitude CPtV
• Latitude CPxH
• Latitude CPxJ
• Inspiron 3700
• Inspiron 3800

The batteries were also sold separately, including in response to service calls. The batteries were shipped to customers between June 22 and September 15, 2000.

James Jamison (phone: 5-1043) is the new Microtexts Specialist in Green Library. On top of his full-time job now in the Media & Microtexts Unit of the Information Center, James is currently enrolled in the Master's Program in English Studies at San Jose State University. His other educational achievements include his having received an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering from Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon and a BA in Anthropology from Chico State University. Mr. Jamison comes to us with a ton of hands-on work experience in electronics and technology, having done everything from testing and repairing circuit boards at Trace Technologies in Livermore to repairing digital video codecs and digital cameras at other job locations in the Bay Area. James also served in the Navy as a Corpsman. Please join with me in welcoming James Jamison to Stanford University Libraries.

Penny Martell, Operations Manager of the Math/CS Library since 1988 and a staff member at Stanford libraries for over 20 years, is leaving SUL/AIR for Stanford Events, where she will be their new Office Manager. Her last day of work at the library will be Tuesday, November 7, 2000, after which she'll be taking some well-deserved time off before she begins her new job, which is located at the nearby Press Courtyard. Her knowledge, warmth and generosity will certainly be missed, but we wish her success in her new endeavor.
