Robert Mayer Retires from Jackson Library

I'm sad to report that Robert Mayer will be retiring from Stanford in the coming weeks, after 23 years of service to the GSB and a 30-year career in the library profession. As you know, Robert has been Acting Director for Jackson Library this year, after having held various positions over the years. His academic staff appointment will end on October 17, 1999, which, by the way, is also the 23rd anniversary of his first day at the GSB. Robert's last day of work will be Friday, October 15th. I know that many of you who have worked with Robert will be sorry to see him leave.

Robert received his Master of Library Science degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1969. His first library assignment was serving as the Assistant Head of the Catalog Department at Georgia State University in Atlanta, where he worked for seven years.

In 1976, he joined the GSB as Jackson Library's Head Cataloging Librarian. Robert has held several other positions, including Head Technical Services Librarian and Head Public Services Librarian. He also served as an Assistant Director for the Library since the early 80's.

Robert assures me that he has a full schedule for the coming year that involves home remodeling, working in his garden, and enjoying San Francisco opera performances. At Robert's request, there will be no public GSB ceremony or formal occasion to mark his departure from the School, but I can assure you that Library staff will be acknowledging the retirement of both Evelyn Hu and Robert at a small private gathering very soon.

I know that all of us at the GSB extend our thanks to Robert for his dedicated service to the School during the last 23 years. We also send him our best regards for many wonderful times ahead as he begins his retirement from Stanford.

BOB KIEFT NAMED LIBRARY DIRECTOR AT HAVERFORD COLLEGE

Bob Kieft, who began his career in the Stanford libraries as a graduate student worker in the old Current Periodical/Newspaper/Microtext unit(s), some of which were buried deep in the basement of Main Library, and then progressed with an MLS to an exempt position in Meyer, has been named Library Director at Haverford College.

Elaine Hansen, Provost of Haverford College, wrote in her announcement last week, "Bob Kieft meets our highest expectations. He is impressively well-qualified for this position. Please join me in thanking Bob for taking on the responsibility of guiding Magill Library into the next millenium."
