This ad will also run in the Stanford Daily on Friday, September 29th. To further assist our efforts to recruit students we have established a referral program for student positions. Green Library is sponsoring a new series of Scholars' Workshops featuring electronic information resources in the Social Sciences and Humanities.

We're starting off the Fall Quarter with an intro to Socrates class on October 4, followed on October 10 with a general introduction session to the libraries web pages. Later workshops will focus on particular databases, such as the Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities Citation Indexes, and broader themes of humanities research in full-text databases, statistical and data resources, resources on non-governmental organizations, and ethnic studies research. The sessions will be taught by staff from the Information Center, the Social Sciences Resource Center and the Humanities and Area Studies Resource Center.

The Scholars' Workshops are 4-5 Wednesdays. They are open to the Stanford community; no registration is required.

Two publications produced by the Academic Computing group within SUL/AIR are being distributed for the beginning of Fall Quarter.

"About Computing" is a yearly brochure that provides an overview of the computing facilities, resources, and services available at Stanford. References are supplied throughout so that you can obtain more detailed information when you need it.

"Speaking of Computers" is a quarterly newsletter that provides information about campus computing and technological activities and resources.

JANE INGALLS - NEW ASSISTANT MAP LIBRARIAN: Branner Library is pleased to announce the appointment of Jane Ingalls as its new Assistant Map Librarian, effective September 1, 2000. She has also accepted a one-year quarter-time assignment to provide reference help and to do collection development for environmental resources at Branner. Jane received her MLS degree from Simmons College. She holds an MA in European History from Columbia University and an MA in Education with a California lifetime teaching credential from Stanford. Jane has also completed a map librarian internship with Phil Hoehn. Jane's work association with Stanford dates back to 1969 when she worked as a scientific programmer at SLAC. That position was followed by a stint as a children's librarian at the Peninsula School in Menlo Park, and as a library staff assistant with the Associates of the Stanford University Libraries. Her more recent work with SUL started in 1994 as an LSII in the acquisitions department. In 1995, she became the project leader of the Database Migration Project, successfully migrating citation files from the mainframe computer to a Z39.50 server. In 1997, Jane began working at Branner Library part-time as an Operations Manager in conjunction with Juanita Shaikh. In addition, she handled reference duties for maps and geology and provided bibliographic instruction. During the 99/00 school year, she was the Acting Assistant Map Librarian. Recently, she has also been an editor and indexer for the American Geological Institute.

CHARLOTTE DERKSEN: Charlotte has pared back her schedule to 0.85 FTE for one year, effective Sept. 1st. She will be taking Thursdays off except for one week of the month. (She's also working reference on Tuesday evenings in Branner, so not in most of the day-time hours on Tuesdays.)

JUANITA SHAIKH: We are also pleased to announce that Juanita will be Operations Manager full-time at Branner, effective Sept. 1st. She and Jane had been job-sharing the position.
