Research and Development
The Digital Library Systems and Services mission includes researching and developing new technologies and ideas. In pursuit of that mission, we have a number of ongoing research projects encompassing the spectrum of library activities. These projects include:
- Leveraging Web 2.0 emerging features and functionality to support a richer, more dynamic information delivery environment. Initial focus: RSS feeds to provide a more dynamic view of the library catalog
- JPEG2000 software, to render the next evolutionary stage of image-based collections over the Web
- Investigating a number of open source repositories to adopt and leverage their components, and to federate with their systems
- Active investigation of different storage platforms to allow scalable, sustainable storage of digital content
- Investigating text analysis tools such as foreign language OCR and automatic metadata generation in order to better process, categorize and recommend documents
- Developing automated processes using vendor, open source, and in-house technologies to simplify and strengthen internal workflows
- Creating and publishing tools, processes, and ideas related to digitization, digital preservation, and library systems to publicize and distribute the products of our research
