The first nickelodeon theatre opened in Pittsburgh in 1905. Admission was a nickel (hence the name), which entitled the patron to watch a short film that lasted up to ten minutes in length. Subjects of the film were typically the latest fashions or curent events, with accompanying piano music. Such movie houses were immensely popular and quickly spread across the country.
