- AHDS: Arts and
Humanities Data Service
Includes training materials and a large number of case studies
in a wide variety of subjects.
- HDS:
History Data Service
A data warehouse located in England. Each data set is accompanied
by complete metadata and ordering information. Not all data is
available to those outside the UK. Includes data sets beyond the
United Kingdom.
- American
Religion Data Archive
This archive includes information about religious affiliation,
religious groups, churches and church membership, and religious
professionals. Data from nearly 200 surveys are included.
- CESSDA:
Council of European Social Science Data Archives
Links from this site lead to dozens of data archives around
the world. Included is information about religion, voting patterns,
demographic data, and much more.
- David
Rumsey Map Collection
Nearly 8,000 cartographic objects (maps, atlases, globes,
puzzles, etc.) from the 18th and 19th century are housed at this
site. All images can be downloaded. There is also a GIS Browser
showing maps of San Francisco, Boston, and the Lewis and Clark
expedition.

Data at Stanford
Information on how to find and use Census data from 1790 to
the present.
- ECAI: Electronic
Cultural Atlas Initiative
The cultural atlas is designed as a tool for displaying and
analyzing cultural and historical information. The projects are
described through the metadata clearinghouse and include the Silk
Road Atlas, the Great Britain Historical GIS, and the Tibetan
and Himalayan Digital Library.
- NHGIS: National
Historical Geographic Information System
This project is designed to aggregate and disseminate census
data from 1790-2000. The project will be ongoing through at least
2006.
- TimeMap
The TimeMap software integrates spatial and temporal components
into traditional GIS analysis. Currently available only to ECAI
Associates, it will be freely available to the general public
in late 2002.
- The
Perseus Project
The goal of this project from Tufts University is to bring
a wide variety of source documents to scholars worldwide. The
site includes text, imagery, maps, gazetteers, and secondary sources.
- The
Valley of the Shadows
This project, out of the University of Virginia, uses GIS
to compare two communities, one Northern and one Southern, during
the Civil War.
- Salem
Witch Trials: Documentary Archive and Transcription Project
A second project from the University of Virginia uses GIS
as a component of its analysis of the Salem Witch Trials. GIS
is used to show the accusations in geographic space and time.
- North
American Religion Atlas
This site uses a geographical interface to view historical
religious information about the United States.
- Time
Pieces: Mapping the time and space of place
Marilynn Taylor uses three dimensions
to map her week. She uses maps generated in ArcView, brass tubing,
and brass towers.
- Cultural
Resources Mapping & GIS Services: National Park Service
A site explaining the use of GIS and GPS in the National Park
Service. Over 90 Civil War battlesites have been mapped.
- Lewis
and Clark Across Missouri
The primary goals of this project are to "geo-reference,
digitize, and map all of the retrievable information from the
Lewis and Clark journals and the 18th and 19th-century land survey
notes along the Big River Corridors of the state of Missouri."
Includes an interactive map server, virtual landmarks and campsites,
sources, and links.

and Clark: 200th anniversary
Spatial News has developed a Web page
devoted to the Lewis and Clark anniversary. Links are provided
to ArcIMS servers, interactive Web sites, and data.
- Past time, past
place: GIS for history by Anne
Kelly Knowles. Available at Branner Library and the Social Sciences
Data Center at Green. Call number: G70.212 .P38 2002.
Each chapter features a different research project using GIS to
explore historical questions.
