Social Science Resource Center (SSRC) FAQ

SSRC Reception Desk Hours:
Monday - Thursday: 10am - 6pm
Friday: 10am-5pm
Sunday: 1pm-5pm


Intersession Hours:
Monday - Thursday: 10am-5pm
Friday: 10am-5pm

1. Where is the SSRC Computer Cluster located? How many computers are available?

  • The SSRC Computer Cluster is in the Jonsson Reading Room, located on the first floor of the Green Library Bing Wing.
  • Twelve Windows machines are available.
  • All machines have CD-RW/DVD drives and USB ports for flash (thumb) drives.
Note: Do Not Download Programs or Applications from Personal or Internet Sources. This Could Result in Significant ‘Down Time’ for One or All Computers.

2. What applications or programs are available?

Basic Applications:
  • Microsoft Office 2003, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Adobe Suite
  • File compression utilitiess
  • SecureCRT and SecureFX for transferring files to remote server
Statistical and Qualitative Software Applications
  • Quantitative (statistical) software, SPSS, SAS, and Stata
  • Qualitative software, NVivo,
  • Data transfer software, Stat/Transfer
  • Persons using these software programs have first priority.
  • For help with any of the quantitative, qualitative and Stat/Transfer software programs, please contact the Social Science Data and Software (SSDS) software consultants via the SSDS Web site at: http://ssds.stanford.edu
SAS, SPSS, and STATA manuals are on 2 hour reserve at the Loan Desk in Green East. Refer to the online Course Reserves Catalog for titles and call numbers. Course Name = Stat Soft Support
 

3. What if an application I’m using freezes or fails?

  • The SSRC Receptionist can help with login protocols, but will refer any other computer-related problems.
  • Refer to the name of the machine located on the label on the computer monitor when reporting a problem to the SSRC Reception Desk.
  • When the SSRC Receptionist is unavailable: shut down the machine, restart and login or try another computer

4. Is printing available? Where do my printouts go? What if I’m having problems printing?

  • Printing is available. Collect your printouts in Copy Room 105B, near the SSRC Reception Desk.
  • Print jobs from machines in this cluster will print to printer labeled, "SUL-GreenW2"
  • Report printing problems to the SSRC Reception Desk .

5. What are some options for saving my files?

AFS, File Transfer, EMail, Thumb Drive

  • AFS: The "My Documents" directory maps to your AFS-->Documents directory on the Leland system
  • WS_FTP/SecureFX: Utility transfers files to your Leland account space.
  • EMail: Use webmail or an external Internet email account (i.e.; Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail) to mail web pages or SOCRATES records directly to yourself.
  • Thumb Drive: Plug in a thumb (flash) drive in an available USB port on the computer to save your files too.

FILES STORED ON THE HARD DRIVE WILL BE PURGED EACH DAY. BE SURE TO SAVE YOUR FILES USING ONE OF THE METHODS DESCRIBED ABOVE.
