Crown Servants, Series One: The Papers of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, 1593-1641, from the Sheffield City Libraries.

Contents: These papers consist of some 2800 holograph letters, mainly addressed to Strafford himself, and a number of letter books in which copies were kept of his own correspondence, along with 16 volumes of manuscript material. An ideal starting point for all scholars and researchers studying the origins of the English Civil War, the Crisis between Crown and Parliament in early Stuart Britain, and the nature of Government and Society in the seventeenth century.

Crown Servants, Series Two: Papers of the Wynns of Gwydir, 1515-1690, and the Clenennau Letters and Papers, 1584-1698, from the National Library of Wales .

Contents: The second series of Crown Servants documents the lives of two generations of an important and influential Welsh family whose power base was in North Wales. Also included are the Clenennau Letters and Papers, 1584-1698 in this project. These papers are an important source for Religion and Politics in Britain through the Tudor and Stuart period - with the family maintaining Catholic and Protestant lines to ensure their survival. It is also an excellent source for topics as varied as the Royal progresses and court entertainment, the English Civil War, and the Gunpowder Plot.

They are a crucial source for anyone studying the reigns of Charles II and James II and provide an important supplement to the State Papers of the period.

Contents: A collection of more than 1,500 rare chapbooks, assembled and preserved by Robert White (1802-74), poet and local historian of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Chapbooks were the "street literature" of the day, offering news, entertainment, and sensation through startling and scurrilous accounts, and formed an essential link between the oral tradition and the popular press of the latter 19th century. The discovery and exploitation of large oil resources had already brought the Middle East to the attention of the world's major powers. The scramble for oil rights was exacerbated by the Arab Revolt in Palestine, a reaction to British support for a Jewish homeland.

Rare Radical and Labour Periodicals of Great Britain
Contents: A collection of over 100 rare 19th-century periodicals which record the history of working-class life, the response to industrial society, the formation of the British Labour Party, the rapid growth of the trade union movement, and the impact of World War I and the General Strike of 1926. The collection is broken down into two series covering the 19th and early 20th centuries, and represents a large number of periodicals (Worker's Cry, Trade Unionist, People's Newspaper, Yorkshire Tribune, Red Rag, etc.) and famous radicals, such as George Bernard Shaw, John Burns, Keir Hardie, Tom Mann, Annie Besant and George Lansbury. Based on the The Warwick Guide to British Labour Periodicals, 1790-1970: A Check-List, by Royden Harrison, which contains information about the dates, publishers, and viewpoints of the titles in the microfilm collection.
