Edwin
V. Warren. Diaries of Two Trips to Alaska from Pacific
Grove, California, 1903 and 1904.
1 Manuscript Box, 2 Diaries
These
two diaries record Warren’s trips to Alaska in
1903 and 1904 to earn money for his tuition at Stanford
and pursue his interest in ornithology. Born in Quincy,
California in 1881, Warren was raised in a devout Methodist
family who were among the founders of Pacific Grove.
Warren studied ornithology, zoology,
and English literature at Stanford. He loved nature and
bird watching, and his journals reflect the many species
of birds he encountered and the scenery he saw. They
also record his trips to Alaska by bicycle and ship and
mining life in the Treadwell gold mine where he worked.

The
Papers of Charles Francis Adams II, 1861-1933

The
Papers of Charles Francis Adams II, 1861-1933, consist
of 55 microfilm reels of manuscripts, diaries, personal
journals and literary drafts which clearly delineate
the long life and diverse interests of Charles Francis
Adams II (1835-1915), soldier, business man, civic leader
and historian. The descendent of two presidents and the
son of a noted diplomat, Adams served with distinction
as a Union officer during the Civil War. After the war,
he became a nationally recognized authority on the railroad
industry, chairing the Massachusetts Railroad Commission
from 1869 to 1879, and ultimately taking on the presidency
of the Union Pacific railroad for six stormy years, 1884-1890.
From 1890 to 1915, Adams was content to be a man of affairs,
speaking and writing widely on historical, educational,
economic and political subjects from his positions as
president of the Massachusetts Historical Society (1895-1915)
and active member of the Harvard Board of Overseers and
the Anti-Imperialist League.
