* Abrams, Gerry [American (New York). Longtime friend & former
business associate. EW lived in his house in Amsterdam for more
than two years (mid-1990s). On account of this, EW began organizing
what became, over a three-year period, the city's best-known monthly
poetry event. Café Co Meyer was immediately across the road
from Abrams' house in the Jordaan quarter. EW began to frequent
the place. The rest is now is slice of Amsterdam literary performance
history [see Café Co Meyer file]. Coincidentally, both Co
Meyer and Abrams' house were regularly used, for several years,
as settings for red-light district scenes (the district itself not
being available for the purpose) by John de Mol Productions in filming
the award-winning television series Baantjer, based on novels by
former policeman and crime-fiction writer Api Baantjer. Abrams now
lives in West Palm Beach, Florida, where EW visited & stayed
with him in November 1999.]

* Altoe, Remo Paul (Aldo) [Italian. Met EW & Jane Harvey (Dec
1975) in Calcutta, where he was stranded after Indian customs officials
had seized all his belongings (he'd neglected to declare the contents
of the VW van he had shipped from Hong Kong and planned on driving
to Italy). The lawyer whose services EW obtained for him via the
good offices of Mohan Sivdasani's father (see Mohan Shivdasani profile)
quickly determined that Altoe had no case whatever: it was impossible
(the lawyer said) for anyone to believe that he hadn't intended
to sell the numerous appliances with which the van was packed full.
EW advised the beleaguered Altoe to seek refuge with Mother Theresa,
with whom he did manage to obtain a personal audience. But Altoe
came back saying, "She wanted my hands. She said 'Give me your
hands.' I can't give her my hands!" Altoe was still stranded
at the same Calcutta hotel when EW & JH passed through again
(late February 1976), telling his tale of woe—a la 'The Ancient
Mariner'—to anyone who would hear it.]

* Arietta, Ben [American businessman, formerly based in Munich,
Germany. During the 1960s, EW worked for BA and Edward M. Rose (see
his profile) as an encyclopaedia salesman. It was through this association
that EW first got to Asia: after more than three years of selling
books to U.S. servicemen in Germany, France & Malta, he jumped
at Rose and Arietta's offer to try & set up a similar operation
in Hong Kong. The eventual failure of this attempt marked a positive
turning point in EW's life. BA later dissolved his partnership with
ER and established his own sales organization. In 1974, EW and Jane
Harvey stayed at his spacious Munich office before heading overland
to Iran, Afghanistan and the Indian subcontinent. JH again stayed
at Arietta's office, briefly and on her own, in the summer of 1974.
And in 1977, Arietta & his wife Ingrid visited EW & JH in
London. EW and Arietta maintained correspondence contact until the
early 1980s, after which they lost touch. A long letter from Arietta
was published in Ins & Outs magazine no. 4/5, under the heading
Bad Debts. By then, Arietta was living in Port Jefferson, Long Island.]

& professional spiritualist. (See <http://www.brucebayley.co.uk>)
He & EW have been extremely close friends since they first met
in London in the summer of 1973. At the time, Bayley was one of
a handful of people sharing a Kennington flat with Jane Harvey.
EW & JH later lived together in this flat. (Also see N. Froggett

editor of the Tehran Journal (a position EW was later to assume),
he & EW met in early 1974, when EW freelanced as a features
writer for the Ettela'at-owned English-language newspaper. The letter
from SC which begins with "Wow!" and is followed by several
short poems stems from the follow occurrence: After leaving Iran,
SC traveled to Greece and settled for a while on the island of Amorgos.
Although he & EW had not stayed in touch, word got back to EW—just
as he & Jane Harvey were finishing up their second working sojourn
in Tehran—that SC was practically penniless. EW immediately
wired him a couple of hundred dollars. When it arrived, brought
to him by the local postman, SC had just spent his very last drachmas
on a bottle of beer and was sitting by the sea pondering his next
move. EW first heard this story in the summer of 1976, when he stayed
at Crawford's Greenwich Village apartment for a few days.]

American Management Association's computer department. EW spent
many of his childhood summers at DeVit's small farm outside Waterbury,
CT; years later (1957) the 2 shared a flat in Manhattan for several
months. EW was at the hospital with DeVit's estranged first wife
when she died of brain cancer; shortly thereafter (1960) he was
best man for DeVit's second marriage. The 2 lost touch not long
after the death of EW's mother (1987).]

First met EW & JH in Tehran in early 1974, at the Amir Kabir
Hotel. Thereafter, they continued to meet up: in Afghanistan, where
they traveled together; later in Dharamsala, India, where they shared
a small house for a month. In 1974-75 (after meeting up yet again),
the 4 shared a large house in Tehran's Armenian neighborhood, together
with the American advertising executive Mick Royston. During EW's
stint as sports editor of the Tehran Journal, he convinced Seiple
to become his assistant. When EW & JH left Iran, Seiple took
over as sole sports editor. In 1976, EW stayed for nearly three
months at the couple's house in San Francisco. Communications continued

One of the "handful of people" (mentioned in the B. Bayley

1970s. He & EW met at the offices of London's GLF (Gay Liberation
Front) when EW was staying at 'Heartbreak Hotel' in Shepherd's Bush
(see Ian & Sue Goss profile). Froggett later rented his room
to EW for the summer, which is how EW & JH met. (After Froggett

* Goenka, S.N. [Indian businessman (born in Burma) & renowned
Vipassana (Buddhist) meditation teacher. During EW's 3-month stay
at The Island Hermitage in Ceylon ((Jan-March 1973), he was given
Goenka's name & Bombay address by the Buddhist monk/author (The
Heart of Buddhist Meditation, etc.) Nanaponika Maha Thera. When
EW's money was stolen in Bombay (Aug. 1974), and after having lived
penniless on the streets for a week, he looked Goenka up at his
offices. Unable to provide suitable accommodations in Bombay, Goenka
offered EW a train ticket to Bodh Gaya, saying he could also arrange
for him to stay indefinitely at the Buddhist vihara (monastery)
there. EW politely refused: It was necessary for him to remain in
Bombay and await mail (and hopefully money) from Jane Harvey, who
was then en route overland to Europe and to whom he had written
care of Ben Arietta (see his profile) in Munich, Germany. SG thereupon
gave EW fifty rupees and said, "Here, try your luck."
Shortly afterwards, EW sent SG his last copy of 30 Poems (self-published
in London, 1973). Circa September 1975, EW & JH met an English
traveler in Pakistan who told them about a SG meditation course
which was scheduled for later that month/early the following month
in Dalhousie, India (foothills of the Himalayas). EW & JH went
there and signed up for the course. [It was on this course that
EW first met Ira Landgarten (see his file, General Inventory; also
Paké & Julie profile below)]. After three days, EW made
an appointment to see SG privately (ostensibly, as was the custom,
to discuss meditation matters). Immediately upon entering the room,
EW proffered SG a 50-rupee note. "You're here to talk about
dharma (the natural order of things, right conduct, etc.),"
SG said. EW responded: "It was very high dharma when you gave
me that money in Bombay." "Then put it on the table over
there and sit down," SG replied.] / In the early 1980s, JH
coincidentally met Jenny Brookes [see EW Timeline, Early May-mid
Oct. 1975] at a SG course in Igatpuri, India. It was on that occasion
that Jenny revealed to JH (who was by then separated from Eddie)
something about her feelings for EW. But, although they were already
corresponding, it would be another 15 years before Jenny Brookes
& EW met again. The two have been living together in Devon,
England since Oct. 1998.]

* Goss, Ian & Sue [Australian & New Zealander, respectively.
Very close friends of EW's from the time they first met in Bali
(1972). Visited EW at The Island Hermitage in Ceylon (early 1973),
at which time EW took a short leave of absence and stayed for some
days with the couple in Hikkaduwa, Moratuwa & Colombo. After
EW had hitchhiked from Munich to England in May 1973, arriving in
London with only 3 pounds to his name and not knowing anyone else
in the city, it was Sue Goss whom he looked up at the Shepherd's
Bush bed & breakfast, 'Heartbreak Hotel.' Ian was in Nepal on
business at the time, returning to London toward the end of EW's
1-month stay at the B&B (see N. Froggett profile). Later maintained
social contact with EW & JH, with whom they also corresponded
during the early Ins & Outs years.]

* Henn, Max † [German (1906-2002). Owner/mgr of Bangkok's
Atlanta Hotel since 1952. Former chemist, univ. lecturer and (1965-1976)
agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). [See bio from
The Big Chilli included in this file.] EW first heard of the Atlanta
Hotel in Hong Kong in 1969, from an Austrian painter-traveler-con
man named Robert*, for whom he edited a traveler's magazine called
Robert's Purple Mirror. When EW & C. Hollis (see his profile)
stayed at the Atlanta in February 1970, the hotel had very few guests
and was mainly frequented by foreign residents who came there to
swim. MH then gave EW a stack of Atlanta business cards, which EW
carried with him when he hitchhiked to Singapore the following month.
On the back of each card EW wrote his own name. He also gave a card
to every traveler he encountered. This move proved to be the Atlanta's
making, for when Singapore's immigrations authorities decided to
expel virtually every budget traveler from the city state, their
only easy recourse was to head straight up the Malay peninsula to
Bangkok. (Fortunately for EW, he had left the main 'hippie area'
of Sam Leong Road only a day or two before, to move in with his
lover Kim [see EW Timeline, March-June 1970], who had a shared flat
(with four other drag-queen prostitutes + an Indian amah or maid)
in the Katong area. "Sie bekommen Geld von mir! (I owe you
money!)," was the first thing MH said to EW upon the latter's
return to Bangkok in June of that year. The Atlanta was full; so
full that MH had to shuffle people about in order to find a room
for EW. The two maintained close personal contact throughout EW's
two-year stay in Bangkok. Before moving to more luxurious quarters
(after he'd landed a job with the Bangkok Post, etc. [again see
EW Timeline]), EW paid for his room at the Atlanta by assisting
MH with his professional correspondence, most notably with Prince
Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia. EW saw MH again when he, Jane Harvey
& Christina Thue (see her profile) stayed at the Atlanta in
April/May 1976. Thereafter, they continued to stay in touch, albeit
intermittently: EW occasionally sent Amsterdam friends who were
visiting Thailand to see him and say hello; and the two spoke on
the phone a couple of times ca. 1990, when EW's then-live in girlfriend
Karin Musso** stopped at the hotel on her way to & from a holiday
in Ko Phangan. EW further kept abreast of Henn's and the Atlanta's
progress by way of Emmy van Draanen (an early I&O editorial
assistant, later P. Edel's relationship partner [see P. Edel file,
General Inventory]), who had herself visited MH and subsequently
developed a close friendship with MH’s son Charles. There
was some email communication between EW & MH in 2000, + has
been from that time with Charles Henn.

* Robert was an interesting character. Although a talented artist,
he found it easier to make a quick buck buying cheap mass-produced
paintings, touching them up, then having his girlfriend sign &
sell them as her own...usually by sitting alone at the bar of an
expensive hotel, nursing both a drink and a large portfolio and
luring unsuspecting punters with her physical beauty + forlorn demeanor.
When EW & Carl Hollis traveled to the southern tip of Luzon
island, in the Phillipines, they encountered a longtime expatriate
resident who knew Robert, and remembered when he'd been apprehended
offshore by the immigrations police, in a small boat and with several
different passports in his possession. Robert's Purple Mirror was
likewise interesting. The first issue contained a classic piece
by Robert entitled "The Rise & Fall of the Thai Song Greet,"
about the Chinese hotel near Bangkok's Hualamphong train station
where EW & JH stayed for a week in May 1976.

Robert Minkoff file (General Inventory). Additional KM letters,

* Hollis, Carl [English & American (dual nationality). Former
British Army paratrooper (served in Cyprus, Aden, Malaya). Attended
Cambridge U. Employed as a croupier at Charlie Chester's club in
Soho, London (at which time he was closely acquainted with the writer
Dennis Wheatley). Also a freelance undercover operative for the
OSI (U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations). Met EW in
Frankfurt in 1968 when circumstances necessitated his leaving the
U.K. and he signed on as a book salesman with E. Rose/B. Arietta
(see their profiles). Was 'given' to EW as a trainee, worked with
him 'on the road' in Germany throughout 1968, and accompanied him
to Hong Kong (see Arietta profile; also EW Timeline for this period
& later), stopping off/staying en route in Athens, Bombay &
Bangkok. CH & EW had a long and varied association; particularly
interesting considering their radically different views on so many
matters (e.g., politics, the military, law & order, drugs, etc.).
After Hong Kong, they traveled together to Japan, the Phillipines,
Thailand, Singapore. CH took a job as a helicopter spotter on an
oil rig off Indonesia. He reappeared, in Bangkok, around the time
EW was finishing up with The Bangkok Post and starting the news
& features service Dateline Asia, of which CH became ad director
for its commerical radio & television projects. When EW left
Bangkok for Bali (March 1972), he assigned his Dateline Asia shares
to CH. Sometime later CH was forced to flee Thailand & eventually
made his way back to Germany. He, EW & JH met briefly at Munich's
train station in 1974, immediately after which the couple caught
a bus to Istanbul (via Yugoslavia & Bulgaria). In 1978, CH &
his second wife showed up in Amsterdam and visited the first I&O
office on the Nieuwe Zijds Voorburgwal. Especially memorable was
a lively conversation that CH had with Ira Cohen. For some years
afterward, CH & EW stayed in periodic touch, including by telephone.
When last heard from he was living in Cambridge, England.]

time, DSL also developed a friendship with Barbara Doran & Frank
Seiple (see their profile), with whom he later stayed in touch.
Towards the end of EW's first San Francisco sojourn (August 1976),
DSL phoned Doran & Seiple from Tucson, Arizona to say he was
coming to California on business and to visit them. EW answered
the phone. "Eddie Woods, what are you doing in America?!"
DSL exclaimed. On Aug. 28, EW drove with DSL to Tucson (see EW's

Dalhousie, India (see S.N. Goenka profile). They met up again in
Calcutta (late 1975-early 1976), where Landgarten was then living

personnel for Bernie Cornfeld's Investors Overseas Services (IOS).
ER was later joined in this operation by B. Arietta (see his profile).
In the early 1970s, ER visited EW in Bangkok. The two saw one another
again in 1976 (March and May), after EW had returned to Europe from
the East and before hitchhiking to London from Munich. EW's friend

* Sofia, Constantino ("Tino") [Austrian-born Australian
national. Trader & artifacts dealer, specializing in rare-unusual
objects intended for museums and collectors. He was on the very
last helicopter flights out of both Saigon and Phnom Penh at the
end of the Vietnam War, on each occasion carrying near-priceless
statuary he had acquired from local residents who had 'liberated'
them from Buddhist temples and needed immediate cash to secure their
own evacuation. In some instances CS's finds have resulted in official
archaeological redatings. CS & EW met at the White House Hotel
in Taipei (mid-1976) and subsequently traveled together around Taiwan,
including a week-long stay at a Ch'an temple near Sun Moon Lake.
They also haunted the bazaars of Taipei and T'aichung, giving EW
an opportunity to observe CS's professional acuity firsthand; also
to pick up a few trading pointers for his own later use. The two
met up again, by arrangement, in Seoul. Thereafter they went their
separate ways, with the intention of meeting again, somewhere. This
never happened, however; and after corresponding for a while afterwards,
they eventually lost touch.]

day). The 3 then shared a room at the Atlanta Hotel (see M. Henn
profile). CT departed Thailand for Germany a week or so later, after
which EW & JH moved to the Thai Song Greet Hotel (see Robert

without a trace. Reappeared in the mid-1970s, after having traveled
the world and then lived for a time in British Columbia, Canada.
Remarried (his first wife having divorced him as soon as it was
legally possible to do so) and settled in Yorkshire, England. Visited
& stayed with EW & Jane Harvey in London (1977). Also (it
has now come to light) on two occasions in the 1970s visited with
EW's first wife & his eldest daughter. EW & Volgarino lost

* Weber, Harold J. [American (New Orleans). Catholic priest (Jesuit).
EW met Weber at St. Mary's (church & college) in Batticoloa,
Ceylon while traveling around the island (late 1972) and before
settling for ca. three months at The Island Hermitage (see EW Timeline,
Oct 1972-March 1973). He stayed at St. Mary's for about a week,
after Weber arranged a room for him in the priests' quarters. The
two immediately became close friends. When EW suddenly left St.
Mary's (having rightly sensed that he was making the other priests
nervous), Weber went looking for him in a jeep, found him walking
along a road, and drove him to a nearby Anglican ashram (where EW
put up for several days). The night before, Weber had given EW a
pocket edition of The New Testament (Gideons, hence the King James
version!), which he inscribed as follows: "[Presented to] Ed
Wood [sic] by one who learned from him so much about true brotherhood.
Harold J. Weber, S.J. Oct. 29th 1972 7.25 pm." This small Bible,
which also contains Psalms and Proverbs, is still in EW's possession.]
