Annuals and Gift Books
The Collection
Between the 1820s and the 1850s appeared a number of yearly volumes in
decorative bindings illustrated with high quality steel engravings which
became known collectively as the "annuals." An important feature
of American bookselling, they featured in their heyday contributions from
many of the foremost writers and artists of the period. Not only do they
include little-known contributions by well-known writers, but they also
serve as a resource to the tastes and social attitudes of the times.
