American Comics and Graphic Novels
The Collections
Stanford has a number of collections devoted to comics and graphic storytelling.
These are contained in different collections are described below.
Locations: Department of Special Collections and Department of Media-Microtexts,
Green Library.
Research Access and Use: Materials in the Department of
Special Collections are non-circulating and must be used in the
Special Collections' Reading Room in the Cecil H. Green Library.
The Reading Room is open 10:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday.
Photocopies, photographs, and microfilm can be made of some materials
in the collections. For more information about the collections and

COMIC BOOKS
Location: Green Library, Department of Special Collections
Content: A selection of 6000 contemporary American comic books
published principally from the mid-1960's to the early 1990's. The majority
of the titles are from two major publishers, DC Comics and Marvel Comics.
Access: Individual titles are not in SOCRATES. A complete alphabetical
listing is available in the Reading Room of the Department of Special Collections.
GENRE COMIC ART COLLECTION
Location: Green Library, Department of Special Collections
Content: A representative collection of American comic books and
comic-strip art, including reprint editions of classic newspaper comic strips,
anthologies and collections of comic books, and sample works of contemporary
graphic novels and comics books.
Access: Individual titles and author/artists are listed in Socrates.
Subject areas represented are in three fields: Comic Books, Comic Strips,
and Graphic Novels. A complete listing of the holdings in the collection
will eventually be available from Socrates by typing "find SP genre
collection." The following lists provide an interim inventory of the
