Literary Resources on the Web

  • Chawton House Library Collection
Currently housed in Redmond, Washington, the Chawton House Library Collection comprises several literary manuscripts and over 6,200 printed books published between 1600 and 1830. The Collection is particularly strong in fiction by women from around 1740. Some novels are on-line.
  • Literary Resources on the Net (Rutgers, Newark)
Like Voice of the Shuttle, Literary Research Tools is a collection of links to other sites on the Internet; focus is on English and American literature, subdivided by chronological periods, from Medieval through Twentieth Century, with an additional section for Theory.
  • The Mander and Mitchenson Theatre Collection
Contains a broad range of materials relating to the British theatre from the eighteenth through the twentieth century, including playbills, music scores, reviews, prints, and photographs. The entire archive is searchable at the collection level, and the pre-1890 London theatre records are searchable at the item level. It also contains a digital image archive of 2,000 items from the collection, as well as an online gallery of painting and artwork.
  • Voice of the Shuttle (University of California, Santa Barbara)
One of the best of the metasites for literature, Voice of the Shuttle catalogs and provides links to electronic resources across the broad spectrum of the humanities and related social sciences; arranged by discipline, with separate sections for English (including American) Literature, Literary Theory, Minority Studies, and Women's Studies, among many others. Begins with useful "Highlights" of especially important sites for each section.
