The Robert White Collection of Chapbooks from the
University Library, Newcastle upon Tyne
The Collection
16 reels reproducing the full texts and illustrations of approximately
2000 British chapbooks printed in the 1700's and early 1800's. Chapbooks
provided news, entertainment, and sensation to the poorer classes of England.
They include riddles and jests, tales of moral instruction, fortune tellings,
adaptations of popular ballads, and accounts of crimes and executions.
A site for the cultural formation of England's rural and urban working
classes, the chapbooks reflect the often conflicting efforts of reformers
and entrepreneurs to shape the taste and influence the values of their
readers.
