Career of Walter de la Mare (1873-1956)
English poet, novelist, anthologist, and writer for children, Walter
de la Mare was born at Charlton, Kent and educated at Saint Paul's Choir
School. Songs of Childhood (1902), a collection for children published
pseudonymously, was his first book. Serious critical attention
came
to De la Mare with Poems (1906). Awarded a civil list pension
in 1908, he devoted himself full time to writing into his eighties.
During
his lifetime he published 5 anthologies, 27 books of poetry, 21 books
for children, 5 novels, and 7 books of short stories. He was made a
Companion
of Honour in 1948 and awarded the Order of Merit in 1953.
Highlights and Research Potential of the Papers
The collection includes letters, manuscripts of poetry, musical scores,
clippings of reviews, and other printed ephemera. Major correspondents
include John Black, Richard Church, Leonard Clark, Graham Greene, Dorothy
Hatch, Edward Marsh, Barbara Morison, Christopher Morley, Lady Ottoline
Morrell, F. C. Owlett, Herman Peschmann, and Elizabeth Myers Powys.
