Hoover and Green collections
Stanford Library holdings include the Hoover Institution’s
rich archival collections on Africa, including pictorial works,
manuscripts, and ephemera, as well as material found in Green Library’s
Special Collections Department. Among Green’s holding is a
three-part set of approximately 1100 postcards from North and Sub-Saharan
Africa dating from ca. 1880-1950, most dated before 1930, listed
in Socrates as Africa: Postcard Collection.
The cards were sent or collected by travelers primarily from France
or other parts of Europe. Their photography, written messages, or
explanatory captions represent the perspective of colonial rule
while at the same time preserving images of people, places, structures,
and practices that have long since disappeared though their effects
live on. A finding guide will increase access to the collection,
and we hope to provide additional digitized images beyond those
few examples seen here.
