The rare, second and improved edition, edited by the author’s son and printed in a limited number of copies. “Le texte de 1764 et celui de 1784 sont si dissemblables qu’ils ne peuvent pas être considérés de prime abord comme exprimant tous deux la pensée de d’Argenson.” (Renouvin, Assemblées provinciales). It is important to have both editions.

     Vehement pamphlet against the Cour plenière, which according to the author, caused the heavy taxes and the despotism of the government. He claims the convocation of an États-Généraux and states that if the power of the King originates from God, “Le consentement du peuple est le signe, l’interprète de Dieu”, all power finally deriving from the people. The printer, frightened by the violence of the text, printed his name and had it followed by the following text: “forced by the people to print” an addition we have never met with before.

     INED 232. Also published as: ‘Principes sur le gouvernement monarchique’ in 1755. This is the first edition. The author advocates tolerance, the further development of agriculture, stimulation of population growth, development of industry and commerce. Bound with: Lescalopier, Charges (See item 367).

     Not in Kress. Especially the first work is of great interest, since it contains a draft for local government and a plan for a social law, proposing to prohibit celibates from certain rights and suggesting taxes to be made in proportion to property.

     In praise of the ancient Parlements, it may be considered as significant that this praise was published at that time. The engraved frontispiece added represents Justice with the balance and the device: ‘Protegit insontes illa, reos que premit’.

     The grievance of the Cour des Aides of Montauban against the Intendant concerning abuse of the corvée, of the revenues of the community, and of the municipal taxations. These kind of trials paved the way for the re-establishment of Parlements and later on for the establishment of the Assemblées provinciales. Bound with: Barral, Manuel (See item 336).

     Deals with the various conflicts between the Parlement de Paris and the King since the 13th century. Significant for the period of the reestablishment of the Parlements. The members of the Parlement de Paris ‘espèrent que par leurs travaux utiles & profitables, le soin qu’ils auront de maintenir les loix en l’ordre public, ils s’attireront la confiance du Public, en rendant, sans distinction, la justice aux pauvres comme aux riches.’

399.      Louis René de Caradeuc de La Chalotais, general prosecutor of the Parlement de Bretagne, author of the famous ‘Comptes rendus des constitutions des Jésuites’ (1762) which encouraged the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1766, was accused of writing anonymous insulting papers against the State’s secretary, Saint-Florentin. The trial divided the Court and the Parlements and constituted one of the most serious attacks on royal power before 1789. La Chalotais was exiled by the King, but returned to his former position in the Parlement de Bretagne in 1775, after the death of Louis XV;
