In early 1998 the Stanford University
Libraries acquired the Braziliana Collection of Ludwig Lauerhass,
Jr., a distinguished scholar of Latin American bibliography and
a bibliophile of Braziliana. The collection was formed over a
period of thirty-five years and inlcudes special editions of the
works of Euclydes da Cunha, Machado de Assis and Gilberto Freyre.
These are in addition to the approximately 4,500 volumes on Brazilian
politics and history of the 20th century, a collection of over
1,000 titles on biliography and reference, a collection of travel
accounts from the 19th century and approximately 1,500 other rare
books.
The collection on or pertaining
to Euclydes da Cunha includes perhaps 200 titles. Virtually everything
written by the author is covered, including all major editions
of Os Sertões. The highlight of this grouping, and
the entire collection, is a manuscript notebook containing 160
pages of his writings.
