2. Africa dreaming, Richard Pakleppa et al., 1 videocassette (109 min.), San Francisco, CA, 1997.
   Abstract: Africa dreaming is a landmark in African television, a series drawing together for the first time broadcasters, television producers, film directors and writers from across the continent. It is designed to give Africans a rare opportunity to speak directly to each other in their own words and images. It is also the first continent-wide media project in which South Africa has played a leading role. Africa dreaming may be a harbinger of what South Africa's advanced telecommunications infrastructure can contribute to the long-term goal of creating a regional film and television industry. Series Executive Producer Jeremy Nathan asked for script proposals for 26 minute dramatic shorts on the broad theme of "love in Africa." Six programs were selected and produced from South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Senegal and Tunisia; four are included on this cassette.

   Abstract: A drama based on the real lives of schoolteachers who try to maintain a sense of dignity as they struggle to survive in the sprawling suburbs around Sao Paulo. In its portrayal of love and violence among urban Brazil's lower and middle classes, the film expands and deepens the treatment of sexual politics previously explored by Reichenbach in his low budget, exploitation "porno-chanchadas".

13. Cabra marcado para morir Hombre marcado par morir, Eduardo Coutinho et al., 1 videocassette (XX min.), Uruguay, 1993.
    Abstract: Twenty years after the Brazilian military coup interrupted work on the film biography of the peasant leader, João Pedro Teixeira (assassinated on the orders of a landowner in 1962), director Eduardo Coutinho managed to complete his work, however with a totally different significance. Returning to the Northeast with what he could rescue from his original work, he begins by assembling the peasants who participated in his original project (or at least those who survived), showing them images of the past, and recording the declarations reactions and testimonies of a sector of society reduced to silence by 20 years of dictatorship. Preceded by Las 100 películas (referenced by "El nordeste en el cine Brasileño" on container), which consists of segments of O Cangeceiro (Brazil, 1953; director: Lima Barreto), Vidas secas (Brasil, 1963; director: Nelson Pereira dos Santos); Deus e o diabo na terra do sol (Brazil, 1964; director: Glauber Rocha); and O pais de Sao Sarué (Brazil, 1971; director: Vladimir Carvalho).

    Abstract: The building of Brasilia in the late 1950's made by "nordestinos" (North Eastern Brazil) who left behind their small possessions, hunger and drought in the belief of finding food, work and money in the new promised land. A dramatic espisode omitted by the authorities at that time is recalled by the remaining workers: a brutal massacre in 1959 in a building under construction. Interviews reveal contradictory opinions ranging from a humble worker to Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer.

Rosa and Manuel flee to join Corisco, former follower of Lampião, as he is stalked by Lampiao's assasin.

    Abstract: Fernando, a journalist, and his friend Cesar join terrorist group MR8 in order to fight Brazilian dictatorial regime during the late sixties. Fernando then decides to kidnap the American ambassador in Brazil and ask for the release of fifteen political prisoners in exchange for his life.

    Abstract: Welles' ambitious film project in Brazil for the United States' anti-Nazi "Good Neighbor Policy" was shelved by RKO. This documentary features the story of the film's making and unmaking and includes portions of "Story of Samba (Carnaval)", "My friend Bonito" and all of "Four men on a raft" which was the only part of the project completed.

    Abstract: Maria suspects that her husband is being unfaithful. "And have you thought about AIDS?," her friends warns her. The development of the story is juxtaposed by documentary elements filmed in Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, and the United States, in which women are interviewed about their knowledge and attitudes about AIDS and preventative measures, if any, they are taking.

    Abstract: The director Friedrich Monroe has trouble with finishing a silent b&w movie about Lisbon. He calls his friend, the sound engineer Phillip Winter, for help. As Winter arrives Lisbon weeks later, Monroe has disappeared but has left the unfinished film. Winter decides to stay, because he is fascinated of the city and the Portuguese singer Teresa, and he starts to record the soundtrack. At the same time Monroe cruises through the city with a camcorder and tries to capture the magic on film. Later they meet and Winter convinces Monroe to finish the film.

    Abstract: A patient in a psychiatric hospital has written a script and tries to convince the administrators to help him make the film. Though they refuse, one of them suggests the patient could direct a show for the Commissioner of Human Rights when he visits the hospital. The patient takes on the challange, but turns the show into an opportunity to take the director hostage. He will release the director, but only if the film can be made. With the help of the Civil Police, a director, actors, and crew are gathered from around the country and brought to the hospital.

The camera captures Cabral's assassination, the ending of hostilities, and the reconstruction of the economically and spiritually devastated country. In Tara a destitute hunchback worships a beautiful woman from afar. She dies on her wedding day and he is then able to adore her at closer range, in her tomb. In Ideología, a professor is unable to convince others during a televised panel discussion that love does not exist. His arguments become more convincing when he gives graphic demonstrations of man's inhumanity to man in his home.

    Abstract: Zeze is a 6 year old with extraodinary liveliness and intelligence who lives with his parents, who are very poor, in a shack along a highway in the interior of San Pablo, Brazil. His older brothers have a private retreat in the garden, leaving Zeze alone with a lime tree. In his imagination, he makes the tree his great friend and confidant. With the help of his tree, he faces the difficulties of his family and of growing up.

    Abstract: Daniel is a taxi driver and lives in a poor area of the city with his wife Gisa and son Quim. One day a film is being shot on their street and Gisa is "discovered" by the director when Quim runs out to play on the set. Meanwhile, Daniel is having violent dreams that may have some connection to reality. He is already on edge from the dreams when he discovers his wife has been cast in romantic scenes; he loses his temper and she threatens to shoot him. Years later, he is still plagued by violent hallucinations and is getting into trouble with the police. Quim, now grown, develops an interest in his mother, who is a glamorous star. Daniel plots to end his problems.

Accepting a "delivery job" from a shady "businessman", Paco is off to Lisbon.     Abstract: "Yndio do Brasil" is a collage of hundreds of Brazilian films and films from other countries — features, newsreels and documentaries — that show how the film industry has seen and heard Brazilian Indians, since they were filmed in 1912 for the first time. The surprising images are surrounded by music and poetry that inaugurate the viewers in the universe of Brazilian Indians, that is alternately idealised and prejudiced, religious and militaristic, cruel and magic. The director presents this rich film under the motto of Richard Leacock: 'The only good Indian is a filmed Indian'. Sylvio Back: 'The film archives in Brazil are a treasure chest of material that can help us find out more about our existence. By discovering more and more about history, we are able to see the judgements and prejudices about our country in a different light.' Most of the films came from the archives of the Brazilian Cinemath que, the Cinemath que of the Museum for Modern Art (Rio de Janeiro), the Indian museum and the National Archive.
