Library catalogs

This section lists major published library catalogs. From bibliographic point of view they are especially important for manuscript books and early imprints which are usually not registered in bibliographies. Union catalogs (Svodnyi katalog) and catalogs of individual libraries play, therefore, an important bibliographic role.

Information about libraries in Russia and their catalogs see Directories.

2. Manuscript books

Catalogs of manuscript collections are published by Russian libraries across the country, old and new, large and small. Libraries in Russia have had a tumultuous history, thus it is difficult to anticipate which library has manuscript books and whether a printed catalog is available. For textological studies all printed catalogs have value, especially since these catalogs contain information about textological variants, artistic values, the printing, watermarks, etc. Unfortunately, they are typically published in limited editions and seldom distributed commercially. Bibliographies listing these catalogs are now quite dated.

3. Printed books up to 1800

Catalogs to individual collections of early Russian imprints are published frequently. There is no readily available bibliography listing them. However, catalogs to major collections and union catalogs listed below will provide adequate information about titles published up to 1800. These union catalogs (svodnye katalogi) fulfill also a bibliographic function. They are arranged much like a bibliography: usually chronologically, with author, title, subject, and geographic indexes. Thus, despite their name, "katalog", they are actually bibliographies with an indication of the location of the listed items. This genre of catalog covers imprints from the beginning of printing in Russia (1564) to the end of the eighteenth century. Information about existing printed catalogs can be obtained from bibliography of bibliographies of catalogs.

5. Private collections

See also Subject sections

Russia has had numerous private collectors whose collections are preserved as entities in major Soviet libraries. Information about manuscript book collections can be found in works by P.K. Grimsted, See Archives.

Examples of important private collections

Titov, A. Opisanie Slaviano-Russkikh Rukopisei... St. Petersburg- Moscow, 1893-1913, 6 vols.

Ul'ianinskii, D.V. Biblioteka D.V. Ul'ianinskogo. Moscow, 1912-1915. 3 vols. Vol. 2 is especially valuable as a bibliography of bibliographies.

Smirnov-Sokol'skii, N.O. Moia Biblioteka. Bibliograficheskoe Opisanie. Moscow, Kniga, 1969. 2 vols. (extensive annotations)

Lesman, M.S. ET AL. Knigi I Rukopisi V Sobranii M.S. Lesmana. Annotirovannyi Katalog. Publikatsii. Moscow, Kniga, 1989.

6. Western repositories, printed catalogs

As catalogs on line are expanding printed catalogs are gradually disappearing thus Simmons (below) listing is still adequate

Simmons, J.S.G. Russian Bibliography, Libraries and Archives. A Selective List of Bibliographical References for Students of Russian History, Literature, Political, Social and Philosophical Thought, Theology, and Linguistics. Oxford, A.C. Hall, 1973, pp. 4-11.

Of note among those listed by Simmons are the catalogs of the Helsinki University Library (available on microfilm) which was a depository library for Russian imprints during the 19th century.

United States:

Slavic Cyrillic Union Catalog for Pre-1956 Imprints Totowa, NJ Rowman & Littlefield, 1980. Microfiche. It includes pre-1956 Cyrillic alphabet imprints reported to the Library of Congress by the American libraries up to 1979. It supersedes the Cyrillic Union Catalog New York, Readex Co., 1952. Microcard.

The National Union Catalog (publishers vary, the most recent is Washington, D.C., The Library of Congress) published since 1983 on microfiche.

The New York Public Library. The Research Libraries. Dictionary Catalog of the Slavonic Collection. 2nd rev. and enlarged edn. Boston, G.K. Hall, 1974. 44 vols. and annual update

Bibliographic Guide to Soviet and East European Studies. 1978. Boston, G.K. Hall, 1979- , includes also items cataloged by the Library of Congress.

Among the most prominent American libraries that have Slavic research collections and published catalogs are: the Library of Congress; Harvard University; The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace; the University of California, Berkeley; and the cited above New York Public Library (especially useful for detecting monographs in series). Most of the catalogs of research collections in the United States are on line and in networks such as OCLC and RLIN
