State Papers
Most records relating to foreign and domestic affairs in the early
modern period can be found in the state papers foreign and the state
papers domestic series covering 1500 to 1782, and these records
are housed in the National Archives (earlier Public Record Office)
in Chancery Lane. Most records from 1782 onward are in the Foreign
& Commonwealth Office (earlier Foreign Office). The State Paper
Office continued until 1852 when its duties were transferred to
the Public Record Office, and in 1782 the modern Foreign Office
was created. Before this time, there was no single department responsible
for the conduct of British foreign affairs. These affairs were the
responsibility of the king or queen until the reign of Queen Anne
at which time these responsibilities gradually passed to ministers.
Many of the records have been microfilmed for use outside of these
government agencies. To locate Stanford microform holdings, see
the Stanford online catalog or the Stanford guide

The Calendars
The calendars of state papers consist of published abstracts of
the records of the Secretary of State who executed the affairs of
state directed by King’s or Queen’s Council. These calendars
or abstracts of the State Papers also serve as indexes and include
three major categories domestic series (Home Secretary), foreign
series (Foreign Secretary) and colonial series (Colonial Office).
Each volume is indexed and may include summaries of state papers.
The print non circulating volumes are shelved by call number in
the government documents stacks in the British Government Documents
section.
