Peruvian Documents
Guide to Government Publications Series
The collection of government publications from Peru is physically
stored in the main stack and in the branch libraries. While those publications
cataloged are represented in the main card catalog under author, title,
and corporate author, many items are within the library system awaiting
cataloging. These publications are temporarily recorded only in the Government
Document Department card catalog which is the one complete record of all
Peruvian government documents in the Stanford University Libraries. Entries
in this catalog are only by governmental agency. The Government Document
Department catalog is also the one location to secure information on holdings
of serials from the Peruvian government.
The strength of the collection rests in the monographic
publications, especially as it relates to agrarian reform and to political
changes and movements. The agencies dealing with the former include the
Direccion de Comunidades Campesinas (38 titles), the Direccion de Promocion
y Difusion de Reforma Agraria (6 titles), the Direccion General de Cooperacion
Popular y Pueblos Jovenes (3 titles), the Direccion General de Promocion
Cominal and the Ministerio de Vivienda. In addition, titles from other
agencies include:
- Campesinado y Revolucion
- forma Agraria, decreto ley 17716
- Reglamentacion de la Reforma Agraria en el Peru
- Reforma Agraria, Exposicion de Motivos y Proyecto de
Ley and
texto Unico de la Ley de Reforma Agraria
Titles concerned with political events include:
- Manifesto, estatuto y plan del Gobierno Revolucionario
- Lineamentos de la Politica Economico-social del Gobierno
Revolucionario
- Noventa Dias Despues la Revolucion Esta en Marcha
- La Revolucion de 1814

- La Guerillas en el Peru y su Represion (1966).
Demographic censuses are available for 1876, 1940, 1961
and 1972 and detailed population data is also contained in the Boletin
de Analisis Demografico (no. 4-5, 8, 11-16). Further statistical data
are in the Extracto Estadistico del Peru for 1918-43 (5 years wanting)
and its successor title Anuario Estadistico del Peru for 1944-69 (the
last published). Foreign trade is covered by the Estadistica de Comercio
Exterior for 1922-49, 51-55, 58, 63 and 1965-70. The complete holdings
for Informaciones Comerciales published for 1950-1968 are also in the
collection.
Development and economic materials are represented in the
various development plans, for 1967-70, for 1971-75 and for 1975-78. The
Comite de Plan Regional de Desarrollo des Sur de Peru has issued a 30volume
set on development in that region. Actualidad Economica del Peru, nos.
1-59 and the Censo Economicofor 1963 give an insight into the economic
situation.
General history is well served by some very specific titles
published by the Comision Nacional des Sesquicentenario de la Independencia
Del Peru (31 titles) and by the Historia Maritima del Peru ( 7 volumes
in 12 physical tomes).
Race relations are considered in Poder Blanco y Resistencia
Negra en el Peru, while information on the petroleum industry is contained
in Estadistica Petrolera del Peru for 1948-72 (1965 wanting).
To complement the strong materials on agrarian reform reference
can be made to the Censo Nacional Agropecuario for 1061 and for 1972.
The strength of the serial collection of government publications
from Peruvian agencies rests on four titles:
- The Presupuesto General which gives budgetary information
for 1854/55, 1863/64, 1879/80, 1891/92, 1896-1900, 1904-07, 1915, 1916,
1918-19, 1921-22, 1924-25, 1929-30, 1933-68, 1971 and 1973/74
- The Memoria of the Ministerio de Hacienda for 1849, 1865/6,
1905, 1907, 1918, 1920, 1923-27, 1931-34, 1936-39, 1941, 1943, 1947,
1949, 1950, 1951-54 (the last published before ceasing was 1955)

1943-47, 1949, 1951, 1953-54, 1957-61, 1965-66, 1972-74
- The Memoria of the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores
for 1898-99, 1901-13, 1915, 1917-18, 1920-29, 1931, 1936-40, 1940/41,
1942/43, 1957-57 (none published for 1958-61) and 1962/63.
New additions are arriving and include the Anuario de la
Legislacion Peruana for 1907-1967, the Memoria of the Superintendencia
de Bancos y Seguros for 1931-1972 and the Balance y Cuenta of the Ministerio
de Hacienda for various years in the 1930's, 40's and most of the fifties
and sixties.
Holdings for government publications in the Coordinate Libraries
are not included in the Government Document Department card catalog and
the several libraries should be consulted for information on their collections.
Of especial importance are the collections in the Hoover Institution,
the Jackson Business Library and the Law Library, all of which include
useful titles for research.
