United States State Documents
Guides
The backbone of the collection is the California State depository
program which began in 1967. Prior to that time many California
titles were purchased or acquired through gift arrangements,
so that there is a distinct historical context to the material.
The depository program includes all publications issued by
the State Printer. These cover a wide range of matters:
• Legislative hearings when transcribed;
• Bulletins on water resources;
• Commission reports;
• Bills, journals and laws of the Legislature; and Statistics.
Especially important are the Governor's press releases, one
of the very few sets in the state.
Of more recent note are the depository collections of the
Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) [San Francisco
region] and the
Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) [Los
Angeles Region]. These provide support to programs in public
policy and regional planning and government. Publications
of planning departments or commissions are actively acquired
to
augment ABAG and SCAG materials. For example, the San Francisco
Planning Commission has designated the Jonsson Library a
depository for its publications, plans and environmental
impact reports.
Publications of other California regional organizations such
as Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) are also systematically
collected.
Documents from other states are not aggressively selected,
with some exceptions:
• Statistical publications since 1986 are acquired in microfiche
as listed in the Statistical Reference Index; the set
continues paper equivalents of statistics collected for earlier years;
• Topical subjects, such as AIDS, are systematically collected
from cities, counties and states, both for historical
documentation of a social crisis and to serve as a `model' of public policy.
The historical collections of early state records are well
represented with two microfilm sets:
• The Library of Congress' Microfilm Collection of Early State
Records which extends from the early 1600's to the late
1800's; this set of 1600 reels reproduces legislative proceedings of
colonies, territories and states, as well as laws, and
constitutional and administrative records;
• The State Censuses Microfiche Collection which contains demographic
censuses conducted by the various states between 1790
and 1945.
