Guide to Government Publications Series

Contents

Introduction

This guide provides help in locating census information in the Green Library. For detailed census information, also consult the Internet pages of Census Bureau ,American Factfinder, Stanford guides, Census basics: demographic censuses: 10 year censuses and US government statistics . The print publications Bureau of the Census catalog of publications 1790-1970 and supplements (C3.163/3: ) and Historical statistics of the United States: Colonial times to 1970 may also be useful.

The population censuses or decennial censuses have been issued since l790 (years ending 0) with the housing statistics component added in the l940 census. The Bureau conducts a population survey program designed to update some data. Statistics from this survey are released in print, Current Population Reports C3.186: SSRC-docs and in electronic format, Current population surveys. Other censuses are taken every five years on years ending 2 and 7 and include those for agriculture, governments, manufacturing, transportation, and the economic censuses (retail trade, wholesale trade, and service industries). The 1997 census of agriculture was conducted by the National Agricultural Statistics Service within the Agriculture Department.

These censuses are also updated by surveys including government employment and finance series, Annual survey of manufactures and County business patterns.

The Decennial Censuses from 1790 through 1970 are shelved in the reference area known as SSRC-Docs, the Social Science Resource Center, Green Library, the Bing Wing. The years 1980 and 1990 are shelved in the Fed-Docs Stacks, Green Library, the Bing Wing.
