Introduction to Government Statistics

United States government agencies produce statistics/data in a decentralized government environment. There are five agencies whose responsibility it is to collect, compile, and disseminate statistics. These agencies are the Census Bureau , Bureau of Labor Statistics, National Agricultural Statistical Service, National Center for Education Statistics, and the National Center for Health Statistics . Other agencies produce statistics in performing activities or in carrying out programs required by law. Statistics prepared by these non statistics agencies may or may not be continued once the program or need has been changed.

The statistics/data are made available in print, microform, cdrom, computer tapes, and via the Internet. This guide includes the Green Library sources only. For additional locations, check Socrates.

To locate US government statistics/data, begin with the publication, Statistical Abstract of the United States issued annually since 1878, Historical Statistics of the United States: Colonial Times to 1970, published in 1975, or the database Statistical Universe . Federal Agencies may also issue their own statistical compilitions or annual reports containing statistics. The Stanford Social Sciences Data Services (SSDS) located in the Velma Denning Room (Room 121F in the Green Library) houses statistics/data on cdrom and provides information and assistance in using this material.

STAT-USA is the Internet service of the U.S Department of Commerce and the site for the U.S business, economic and trade community, providing authoritative information from the Federal government.

Statistical Universe
Statistical Universe provides an online index to statistics including those created by the United States government agencies. It indexes the publications page by page and table by table. The database begins with 1972 data but has included 1960s data for selected topics like demography and economics. To access the database, select from Databases on the Stanford Libraries homepage. Select the Overview and Help buttons to learn more about the database and how to search it.

The following statistical volumes include statistics on all subjects including many non government sources. The volumes include subject indexes and excellent footnotes.

   The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The survey has been conducted for more than 50 years. The CPS is the primary source of information on the labor force characteristics of the U.S. population.
