Abstract: The ability of Macrocystis pyrifera to accumulate trace metals in particulate form under aerobic and anaerobic conditions is examined. Under aerobic conditions, Macrocystis appears to concentrate Cd, Ni, and Mn after two weeks of decomposition. From experiments using dialysis tubes, detrital Macrocystis demonstrates the ability to concentrate Fe twenty times the concentration of standing Macrocystis.
