Abstract: I investigated the settlement of B. glandula in response to several potential chemical cues. Results of field experiments indicate that this barnacle uses the presence of conspecific barnacles and possibly a subtidal congener as cues when chosing an appropriate settlement site. Gastropod mucuses did not ellicit the settlement response. It is important to note, however, that these reults are only preliminary, as they are based on limited replication and that the true pattern may only emerge when many replicates are used.
