Items listed in Socrates as being "in process" have been received by Music Technical Services but have not yet been fully cataloged, bound, or stamped. "In process" items are available for use in the library; please ask at the Circulation Desk. Patrons may also request that items be processed for borrowing and be notified when they are ready. Items requiring binding take additional time, although requests are processed as quickly as possible.

Suggest a purchase

Suggestions for additions to the Music Library's collections are welcome. Online request forms are available for book, score, and recording purchase suggestions. If you require extensive materials for teaching or research, it is advisable to meet with Mimi Tashiro, Music Bibliographer (725-1144) to discuss your needs. Faculty requiring materials for courses taught in the Music Department should submit their requests as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for ordering and processing.

Stanford Auxiliary Library (SAL)

The Stanford Auxiliary Library houses infrequently-used monographs and journals from the collections of Stanford University Libraries. Materials shelved in SAL are identified as such in Socrates, Stanford's online catalog. Titles may be browsed and borrowed directly from SAL.

A paging service is available to individuals who want to have SAL material delivered to another campus library, including the Music Library. Paging requests must be placed using the "request SAL" capability in Socrates. A SUNet ID may be required. Patrons are notified of paging results. Materials will be held for pick-up at the desired library for seven days and then returned to SAL.

Borrowing from other institutions

Items not in the Stanford collections may be requested from other libraries. See the SULAIR Interlibrary Services Document Delivery page for more details and access to the online request form. Faculty, academic or professional staff, and currently registered graduate students at UC Berkeley, Stanford, and UT Austin are eligible for Research Library Cooperative Program (RLCP) privileges, including priority borrowing. Through RLCP, Stanford faculty, academic or professional staff, and currently registered graduate students can use their Stanford ID cards to borrow library materials when visiting the UC Berkeley campus.

Borrowing from Stanford (by non-Stanford researchers)

Please refer to the policies and procedures detailed on the SULAIR Interlibrary Lending page. All requests must originate from your home institution and be sent to the Interlibrary Services Office.

Independent researchers are required to submit requests through their local public library; the Music Library cannot lend materials directly to independent researchers other than those who have purchased borrowing privileges through the SULAIR Privileges Office. Photocopy requests from other institutions may be submitted through the SULAIR Interlibrary Lending page. For information regarding Stanford dissertations and theses in music, see FAQs.

In particular, please note that Music D.M.A. projects, M.A. projects, M.A. theses, and Senior Honors projects may be used in-house only. These materials are not available for loan or photoreproduction.

Consortial agreements

Memorial Library of Music
