Music in the Stanford Libraries
The Music Library is the primary collection of music in
the Stanford Libraries. It includes materials in a number of formats,
with an emphasis on western art music. The collection largely reflects
Department of Music program offerings both past and present.
The library contains more than 100,000 books and scores.
The book collection covers a range of subjects and includes biographies
of composers, performers, and others involved with music; general surveys
as well as in-depth studies of the history of music by geographical
area, chronological period, or genre; librettos (i.e. the texts of operas
and other vocal works); collections of essays and festschriften; catalogs
of exhibits of music materials or music collections; writings on the
philosophy and aesthetics of music; works on computer music, music theory,
and Baroque dance. Although the Music Library has a small collection
of rare books and scores, most of Stanford's rare music materials are
located in the Department
of Special Collections.
The library's musical scores collection contains western
art music from all periods and includes composer collected editions
(i.e. a set containing all the works of a particular composer); monuments;
performance editions of instrumental, vocal and choral music; study
and full scores of orchestral works; and vocal and full scores of operas
and large choral works. In addition, there is a good collection of vocal
selections from Broadway musicals, and a limited amount of folk and
popular music. There are also a significant number of facsimile editions,
with the more elaborate ones painstakingly reproduced with the greatest
detail. Some noteworthy examples are:

Some of these sets have accompanying printed guides that
provide the only listing of their contents. See the Socrates citation
for the set you are interested in to ascertain if a guide exists and
where it is kept.
The Music Library is also home to the Lully
Archive, a repository of primary sources on microfilm gathered in
support of a publication of the complete works of the composer Jean
Baptiste Lully. In addition, the Music Library and Department
of Special Collections contain many first and early editions and
livrets of his operas and ballets, which can be found in Socrates.
The Music Library's collection of more than 30,000 recordings
is supplemented by the extensive collection of the Stanford
Archive of Recorded Sound. Tapes of recent Music Department concerts
may be used in the library. The video collection is enhanced by the
much larger collection in Green
Library's Media-Microtext Center.
The Music Library currently subscribes to several hundred
journals and owns a small collection of instrument drawings. The most
recent issues of journals are shelved alphabetically by title in the
Reference Room, with the older volumes shelved in the stacks under their
call numbers.
Other Stanford Collections Containing Music
Department
of Special Collections, located in the Bing Wing of Green Library
The Memorial Library of Music, which is housed in Special Collections,
is Stanford's premiere music collection, and contains over 1,500 printed
and manuscript scores of operas, symphonic works, chamber music, and
choral works by major composers from the seventeenth to the twentieth
centuries. A catalog of the collection was compiled and published by
Nathan Van Patten and published in 1950. Copies are available in the
Music Library Reference Room, ML136.S8 S8 1950. Materials added to the
collection after the publication of the catalog may be found in Socrates.
Media-Microtext
Center located in the basement of Green Library East
contains a large collection of videos of operas and films, in addition
to sound recordings. Use Socrates to find what materials are in MMC.
Green
Library Stacks
There are also music materials in the Green Library Stacks. Some duplicate
Music Library holdings, but there are many books about jazz, rock, and
popular, ethnic, and folk music, that are unique in the Stanford Libraries.
Use Socrates to find materials in the Green Stacks.
Archive
of Recorded Sound
The Archive contains an extensive reference collection which supplements
the materials in the Music Library's Reference Room. Its large sound
recordings collection includes all types of music, and is the one of
the most extensive collections of its kind in the country.
