FAQs: Finding songs, arias, and translations

Single-Composer Collections

(back to FAQs)

The complete songs of some prolific composers such as Brahms, Fauré, and Schumann have been published in multi-volume sets. Since these include large numbers of songs, their titles are not listed in the bibliographic citation, and are therefore not retrievable in Socrates. The title you see in Socrates for these sets in the Long Citation, is [Songs], sometimes including the language of the original and translations, e.g. [Songs. English & German]. If you are looking for a song by a composer who has an edition of his/her complete songs, you can assume that it is included in the collection. Song collections of a particular composer are usually found in M1620, in the stacks downstairs, roughly in alphabetical order by composer. For example, a collection of all of Schumann's songs can be located at M1620 .S39.

It is common to find collections that do not include a composer's entire output but contain selected songs. These are indicated in Socrates by the title [Songs. Selections].

Contents of the titles included in single-composer collections in the Stanford Music Library are listed for these composers:

Brahms
Fauré
Schumann
