EndNote and RefWorks: Importing Citations from LANL Databases
(Biosis, Engineering Index, INSPEC, SciSearch, SearchPlus)

EndNote and RefWorks To |
- import citations from online databases
- store, manage and search a personal library of citations
- insert citations into word processing documents and then compile
a bibliography for those in-text citations in any format

to Import Citations via Direct Export |
- Obtain a search result database
- Mark desired citations:
a. check the box to the left of the citation in the Results Page
b. check the "Mark this record" box at the top of the
Full Record or Abstract display
c. check the "Mark All" box at the top of the Results
Page to mark all citations on that page (Note: to mark all results
for your search rather than a single page of results, check the
"Mark All" box at the top of every Results Page for
your search.)
- Click "Marked records" in the left navigation column
- Choose level of detail desired (Note: do not include bibliography)
- Choose EndNote or RefWorks under "Export into bibliographic
software"
- Click Submit
- EndNote or RefWorks will launch and prompt you to select a library
(EndNote) or login (RefWorks)
- Once a library (EndNote) is selected or login (RefWorks) is
successful, citations will automatically import into the program
- If direct exporting is not working for you, then
a. (EndNote) try downloading the Export Plug-in from ISI ResearchSoft

b. (RefWorks) contact info@refworks.com
c. use the filter method (next section)

To Import Citations Using Filters |
- Obtain a search result database
- Mark desired citations:
a. check the box to the left of the citation in the Results Page
b. check the "Mark this record" box at the top of the
Full Record or Abstract display
c. check the "Mark All" box at the top of the Results
Page to mark all citations on that page (Note: to mark all results
for your search rather than a single page of results, check the
"Mark All" box at the top of every Results Page for
your search)
- Click "Marked records" in the left navigation column
- Choose level of detail desired (Note: do not include bibliography)
- Choose "View in Browser" output format to be RIS
- Save file as a text (*.txt) file
- Launch EndNote or RefWorks
- (RefWorks) Select "Import" from the "References"
menu. For "Import Filter/Data Source," select "RIS
Format." For “Database," select “RIS Format”.
For “Import Data from the following Text File”, click
“Browse” and select the text file containing your
search results. Click "Import" at the bottom of the
screen. Citations will load into RefWorks.
- (EndNote) Under the "File" menu, choose "Import."
Click "Choose File" to select the text file to import.
Under "Import Option," choose "Reference Manager(RIS)."
Click "Import." References will load into the EndNote
window.
